Bobcats Upended by Bulldogs
Hamden, C.T. -- Danielle Alexieff (Middletown, N.J.) scored her first career goal in the Bobcats' 5-2 loss to Yale Saturday afternoon at the TD Banknorth Sports Center. The Bobcats are now 3-14-4 overall and 0-10-3 in the ECAC, while Yale moves to 7-6-4 overall and 4-5-2 in conference play. The Bobcats' Elyse Cole (Belleville, Ontario) also scored her team-leading 7th goal of the season in the defeat.
Yale jumped out to an early 1-0 lead four minutes into the opening period on a Kristen Stupay goal. Stupay tipped the puck off a Carlee Ness slapshot from the point that found its way into the back of the net.
The Bobcats would even the score, 1-1, just 4:02 later when Cole scored a power-play goal. Cole raced in from the left circle to knock home the rebound from a Kallie Flor (Farmington, Minn.) point shot. Flor's shot hit Yale goaltender, Jackee Snikeris, before falling to the side of the goal mouth where Cole was able to pick up the loose puck and score.
The Bulldogs started the second as they had done in the first, scoring just 1:41 into the middle frame. Jamie Miller (Richmond Hill) made the initial save on Helen Resor's shot before Mandi Schwartz jumped on the loose puck and scored her second of the year.
Quinnipiac was unable to score in the second and Yale maintained the 2-1 lead heading into the third. Antoinette Maldonado (Glendora, Calif.) had the best opportunity to tie the game for the Bobcats when she broke in and toe-dragged the puck around one defenseman and forced to Snikeris to slide across the crease to make the pad save.
Yale exploded for three third period goals. Sarah Tittman continued Yale's trend of goals early in the period when she scored her tenth of the year 2:23 into the third. Resor was credited for the fourth Yale goal of the game after the puck bounced in off the skate of a Bobcat defender at 12:51.
Yale put the game away at 15:56 on a Maggie Westfal goal. Westfal put in a rebound after Alyssa Clarke was stopped by Miller on a 2-on-1 break.
Quinnipiac made it 5-2 with 1:18 remaining in the game when Alexieff scored her first career goal on a breakaway. She broke in behind the Yale defense and made one move on Snikeris before pulling the puck back to her forehand for the shot. The unassisted goal was also the first point of her career through 76 games.
The Bobcats' Miller stopped 33 of the 38 shots she saw in the game, while Yale's Snikeris recorded 28 saves.
The Bobcats return to action next week when they start a four-game road swing by taking on Wayne State in Detroit, Mich. on Friday Jan. 18 at 7 p.m.
