ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Big Red women's ice hockey team shut out Union, 3-0, on Saturday evening at home in Lynah Rink. Cornell scored a goal in each period, while goaltender Jenny Niesluchowski made seven saves in her second shutout of the season. The Big Red improves to 8-7-1 overall and 5-4-1 in ECAC Hockey action. Union falls to 1-17-2, and is winless in league play with a 0-10-2 record.  

Senior Caeleigh Beerworth gave her team a one goal lead after grabbing the puck from the defensive zone and skated it all the way down the ice. Beerworth faked the goaltender Lundy Day and was able to flip the puck into the left side of the net. Her unassisted goal was scored at 11:01 of the first period.  

The Big Red retained a one goal lead until 4:47 of the second period. Sophomore Liz Zorn had the puck behind the Dutchmen goal and passed it to freshman Rebecca Johnston on the left side of the net. Johnson found junior Emma Chipman wide open on the right side, and Chipman netted the puck in a wide open net to give her team a two goal lead.  

In a period plagued by eight combined penalties, both teams remained scoreless during power play opportunities. Sophomore Laura Danforth and senior captain Caeleigh Beerworth had control of the puck around the Union net when they passed it to defenseman Sam Wauer at the blue line. Wauer rifled a huge slap shot from the left point sending the puck flying past Day's shoulder at 16:34 of the third period.  

The Big Red outshot Union 38-7. Day made 35 saves in net for Union. Niesluchowski improves to 4-5 for the season.  

Cornell will be back in action next weekend as it faces St. Lawrence and Clarkson on the road.
