Bobcats Fall to Brown
Hamden, CT -- Four second period goals by the Brown University Bears women's hockey team were enough to defeat Quinnipiac as they beat the Bobcats Friday night, 6-1 at the TD Banknorth Sports Center. Quinnipiac's Trudy Reyns (Port Hope, Ontario) scored the lone goal for the Bobcats as they fall to 3-12-4 overall and are now 0-9-3 in ECAC play. The win improves Brown to 2-11-3 on the season and 2-7-2 in conference.
The first period ended with neither team able to find the back of the net, but not for a lack of chances. Kallie Flor (Farmington, Minn.) was stopped after receiving a pass from Breana Burton (Surrey, B.C.). Flor tried to wrist a shot past Nicole Stock, but was denied by a quick glove save at 13:25.
Quinnipiac goaltender Jamie Miller (Richmond Hill, Ontario) got into the act when she stopped Brown's Maggie Suprey on a breakaway chance with a little over three minutes left in the period. Suprey broke in on Miller after picking up a loose puck in the neutral zone and tried to go high to Miller's glove side, but was stopped by the Bobcat netminder.
Brown came out quick in the second scoring a goal just 42 seconds into the middle frame. Heather Lane blasted a shot from the point that found its way past Miller and into the back of the net.
Brown would score another goal just 1:18 later when Hayley Moore was stopped twice in front before Savannah Smith slammed home a rebound for her first goal of the season.
Just under three minutes later Brown would make it 3-0 when Jenny Cedorchuk jumped into the play and knocked in a goal. Miller was able to deflect the puck into the air before it bounced along the line and rolled into the net.
Brown scored their season-high fourth goal of the game at 9:12 of the second period. Moore scored after Erica Kromm's shot was deflected and left laying in the slot. Moore jumped on the puck and fired it past Miller for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Quinnipiac's Captain, Reyns, finally got the Bobcats on the scoreboard at 8:59 of the third with a booming slapshot from the point. Reyns called for the puck in the middle of the ice when Nicolette Leone (Trenton, Ontario) picked the puck off the wall and passed to Reyns. It was Leone's first assist of the season, while Elyse Cole (Belleville, Ontario) picked up her sixth helper of the year.
Moore scored her second goal of the game a minute and a half later when she took the puck from the faceoff circle and roofed a shot high over Miller's glove for the 5-1 lead.
Brown would make it a five-goal lead on an Erin Conors tip-in on the power play. The Bears cycled the puck down low before Samantha Stortini's shot was deflected in past Miller, driving her from the net in favor of Tia Wishart (Vancouver Island, British Columbia).
The Bobcats finished the game mustering 23 shots against Stock, while the Bears were able to fire 34 shots on the combination of Miller and Wishart.
The Bobcats return to action tomorrow night when they take on Yale at the TD Banknorth Sports Center at 4 p.m.
