Knights Battle To Tie Versus Dartmouth
Potsdam, NY -- Two penalties late in the third period gave the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team a 5-on-3 advantage, and the Golden Knights capitalized with the power-play goal to tie Dartmouth College 3-3 in ECAC Hockey action in front of 288 fans Friday night at Cheel Arena.
The Golden Knights moved to 14-4-3 overall and
5-3-1 in the ECAC Hockey League, while Dartmouth now finds itself
at 11-4-2 and 8-3-1.
Despite being out shot early on, the Golden Knights found
themselves on top early thanks to a Big Green penalty in the first
five minutes. Senior Amanda Dittmer (Chatham, ONT) scored her
second goal of the season on a pass from Marie-Jo Gaudet
(Sherbrooke, QUE) as Dittmer took a shot from the point and it
found its way through the defense and a screen to make the score
1-0 at 5:32. The lead was shortlived, however, as Jenna Cunningham
tallied for the 17th time this season with a similar shot and goal
just four and a half minutes later. Less than two minutes later,
Gaudet scored an unassisted marker, her 12th goal of the
season, when she skated out of the corner with a loose puck
and took a shot from about 10 feet away to give Clarkson a 2-1
advantage.
In the second period, the Big Green knotted the game up 2-2 with a
redirected shot from senior Nicole Ruta.
The two teams were fairly even in shots and most other categories
after two periods, setting the stage for a closely contested third
period. Dartmouth earned its first lead of the contest when Katie
Gray picked up her second goal of the season after a few
deflections allowed the puck to make it through traffic and into
the back of the net, giving the Big Green a 3-2 edge with about 10
minutes remaining.
Only ten seconds remained in the two-man advantage for Clarkson
when Kim McKenney (Smiths Falls, ONT) tallied her second goal of
the season when the puck was worked around a packed defense,
finding McKenney's stick for the equalizer. Both Britney Selina
(Thornhill, ONT) and Genevieve Lavoie (Delson, QUE) earned
assists.
Clarkson, after being out shot 14-11 in the first two periods, held
a 12-5 advantage in the final frame for a 23-19 edge in the game.
Eve Grandmont-Berube (Drummondville, QUE) made 16 saves for
Clarkson, while Carli Clemis made 20 saves for Dartmouth.
