Brown Offense Explodes in Win at Quinnipiac
Hamden, CT - In the first
9:20 of the second period, the Brown women's ice hockey team
(2-11-3, 2-7-2 ECAC Hockey) scored four goals, more than it had in
any game this season, ending its 14-game winless streak with a 6-1
win over Quinnipiac (3-13-4, 0-9-3 ECAC Hockey) at the TD Banknorth
Center in Hamden, Conn. on Friday night. Senior Heather Lane
(London, ONT), junior Savannah Smith (Fort St. John, BC), and
sophomore Jenny Cedorchuk (Medfield, MA) all scored within the
first five minutes of the second, with senior Hayley Moore
(Wakefield, MA) adding two goals and sophomore Erin Connors
(Newburyport, MA) adding another late.
After a scoreless first, the Bears came out of the intermission
firing. Lane got the scoring started with her first goal since
November of 2005, blasting a low shot from just inside the blue
line thanks in part to a screen from Connors, and an assist from
freshman Maggie Suprey (South Boston, MA). Just 1:18 later, Smith
trailed Moore on a breakaway, grabbing the rebound from Moore's
shot and putting it home for a 2-0 Brown lead and her first goal of
the season. At 4:58, Cedorchuk lifted a backhand over the sprawled
Quinnipiac goaltender, with the puck taking one bounce before
entering the net for her second goal of the year. Moore and
freshman Erica Kromm (Naramata, BC) earned assists on the goal.
Now in firm control of the contest, the Bears got one more
insurance goal at 9:20. After winning the faceoff in the Quinnipiac
zone, sophomore Andrea Hunter (Fulton, NY) passed the puck up top
to Kromm, whose long shot was saved, but kicked out to Moore, who
deposited a wrist shot five-hole for her fifth goal of the season
and fourth in eight games.
Quinnipiac finally got on the board at 8:59 in the third, as junior
Trudy Reyns blasted a shot from the point just under the crossbar
to prevent the shutout. The Bears answered right back though, as
Moore scored her second goal at 10:30 off a faceoff win by Hunter,
and Connors redirected a shot by freshman Samantha Stortini
(Sudbury, ONT) for the Bears' sixth goal at 12:31 for the final 6-1
score.
The Bears' goal output was even more impressive given that two
shots that appeared to be goals were called back. In the first
period, freshman Jaclyn Small (Thornhill, ONT) sent a missile in
from the left point that appeared to ripple the netting in the top
right corner, but the referee, who was right on top of the play,
ruled no goal. Suprey appeared to have the same thing happen to her
on almost the exact same shot midway through the second period, but
again the referee, who was in good position, ruled it as no
goal.
Meanwhile, Stock was typically stellar in the Bears' end, making
two point-blank reflex saves in the span of a minute around the
seven-minute mark in the first period, then holding strong the rest
of the way, finishing with 22 saves. For the game, Brown out-shot
its hosts 34-22.
Moore's four points give her 118 for her career, passing Pam Boone
'82 and tying her with two-time Olympian Tara Mounsey '01 for 12th
all-time at Brown. Moore now has 14 career points in five games
against Quinnipiac on nine goals and five assists.
On Saturday, the Bears will travel south to Princeton, N.J., for a
4 p.m. tilt with the Tigers at Hobey Baker Rink.
