
Dutchwomen and Rensselaer Skate to Draw
Schenectady, NY -- Marissa Gentile (Groton, MA) scored her second goal of the game for the Dutchwomen at 19:56 of the third period to tie the game at four. The game would end in a 4-4 tie. The Engineers go to 8-8-3 overall and 3-5-2 in ECAC Hockey league play. Union's record now stands at 1-15-2 overall and 0-8-2 in ECAC Hockey play.
Rensselaer jumped out to a 1-0 first period lead when Sophomore Whitney Naslund shot the puck past Union Junior netminder Lundy Day (Calgary, AB) from the left face off circle beating her hick on her blocker side. The Engineers would tack on another first period goal to close the period at 2-0.
The Engineers would open the scoring in the second period on the power play. Allison Wright collected the puck behind Day and threw the puck towards the net. The puck would hit Day in the back of the leg and trickle into the net for a 3-0 Rensselaer lead.
Union would then respond with three unanswered goals. Brenna Malnar (Soughgate, MI) would take the puck in the left face off circle and fire a pass to Gentile. Gentile would collect the puck and take a wrist shot that beat Engineer netminder Ashley Mayr on the glove side. The Dutchwomen's second goal would come at the 15:48 mark from senior Courtney Chais (Plantation, Fl). Chais would take advantage of a rebound shot that generated traffic in front to net her fourth career goal. Union would tie the game at three with 39 seconds remaining in the second period. Suzie Pocock (Sterling Heights, MI) would take a rebound shot from Gentile and beat Mayr high on the stick side.
The Engineers would score just 51 seconds into the third period as Naslund created a turnover in the Dutchwomen zone. Naslund would skate in alone on Day and beat her high on the glove side. The score would remain the same with less than one minute to play. Union would pull Day with 44 seconds remaining in the game. The move would pay off for the Dutchwomen.With just four seconds remaining, Gentile took a pass from Chais and fired a shot in the slot that got past Mayr. The two sides would skate to a draw in the overtime period.
Day finished the game with 48 saves in goal for Union while Mayr finished with 13 saves in net for the Engineers.
For Union it marked the first time since 11/11/06 that the Dutchwomen had scored four goals in an ECAC Hockey contest.
