Princeton Takes Playoff Opener at Clarkson
POTSDAM, NY -- Junior Christine
Foster's goal late in the first period stood up as the Princeton
women's hockey team defeated No. 9 Clarkson 1-0 in their
best-of-three ECAC Hockey Quarterfinal series at Cheel Arena.
Junior Kristen
Young made 24 saves for the shutout.
The two teams played their second consecutive game but took some
time to let the game settle down into a defensive match. Neither
team had that many chances early, but the Tigers were able to take
advantage of a good chance in the first period off a 2 on 1.
Junior Katherine
Dineen started the play with a breakout pass in the Tiger zone to
send junior Annie
Greenwood and Foster into the Clarkson zone. Greenwood took a shot
that was blocked but the puck came to Foster whose shot was saved,
but the rebound hit a Clarkson skate and slid into the open net for
Foster's sixth goal of the season.
From that point on the show belonged to Young in the Princeton net
as she stopped all shots that came her way, including a Clarkson
breakaway chance in the closing minutes. It was her seventh shutout
of the season.
Princeton now leads the playoff series 1-0 with Game 2 scheduled
for Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. The win moved Princeton to 14-10-6
overall, while Clarkson dropped to 22-8-5.
