
Big Red Drops Heartbreaker to Harvard
CAMBRIDGE, MA -- The Big Red women's ice hockey team lost 3-2 to No. 1 ranked Harvard in game one of ECAC Hockey quarterfinals on Friday night at the Bright Hockey Center. Cornell held a 2-1 lead going into the third period, but the Crimson's Jenny Brine notched two goals to give her team the win. Cornell is 12-16-1 this season while Harvard is 28-1.
Harvard's Sarah Vaillancourt gave her team a one goal advantage at 8:32 of the first period when she notched her 22nd goal of the season unassisted.
At 18:31 of the first period, freshman Hayley Hughes tied the game up with her third goal of the season. Senior co-captains Brittany Forgues and Caeleigh Beerworth assisted on the goal. With less than a minute left in the second period, freshman Karlee Overguard gave Cornell its first lead against the Crimson when she notched her sixth goal of the season. Beerworth and defenseman Steph Ulrich picked up the assists on the go-ahead goal.
With only one minute off the clock in the third period, Brine tied the game at two goals apiece on the power play. Brine scored another power play goal 11 minutes later to win the contest for the Crimson.
Sophomore goaltender Jenny Niesluchowski was in net for the Big Red making 53 saves, while Harvard's Christina Kessler earned her 26th victory of the season on 20 saves. Cornell will take on Harvard again Saturday afternoon for a 4 p.m. game. Live video will be available via B2 Networks. A pay-per-view subscription will be available for fans.
