
Cornell Falls, But Clinches Playoff Berth
ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Big Red women's hockey team
lost 5-1 to No. 10 Dartmouth on Friday night at Lynah Rink. Despite
the loss, Cornell clinched an ECAC Hockey playoff spot because of
results from around the league. Freshman Katie Bredice notched
Cornell's only goal of the night, while sophomore goaltender Jenny
Niesluchowski made 33 saves in net. The Big Red moves to 12-14-1
overall and 9-11-1 against league opponents, while Dartmouth
improves to 15-7-6 and 12-5-4 ECAC Hockey.
The Big Green went ahead 3-0 in the first period with goals by
Sarah Parsons, Julia Bronson and Larissa Roche. Dartmouth's Carrie
Thompson scored her team's fourth goal of the night on the power
play at 11:49 in the second period.
At 2:48 of the third period, Maggie Kennedy scored unassisted on a
delayed penalty to notch Dartmouth's fifth and final goal.
On its fifth power play opportunity of the night, Cornell notched
its only goal of the game. Senior Brianne Schmidt shot the puck at
goaltender Carli Clemis who made the initial save but let off a big
rebound. Bredice found the puck flipping it into the net to notch
her second goal of the season. Freshman Hayley Hughes earned an
assist.
The Big Red will play its final home game of the season on
Saturday, Feb. 23 when it will play host to No. 1 Harvard at 4 p.m.
Cornell will honor its four seniors Caeleigh Beerworth, Brittany
Forgues, Brianne Schmidt and manager Sarah Johnston after the game.
