
Colgate Skates Past Dutchwomen
SCHENECTADY, NY - The Colgate Red Raiders jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead and got two goals from leading scorer Sam Hunt on their way to a 4-1 triumph over the Union College Dutchwomen Saturday afternoon at Messa Rink. Colgate improves to 12-13-5 overall and 9-7-4 in ECAC Hockey while the Dutchwomen fall to 3-25-0 overall and 0-18-2 in ECAC Hockey.
The Union College hockey team, ECAC Hockey, and the American Cancer Society laced up their skates together for Pink at the Rink Saturday afternoon at Messa Rink. Pink at the Rink is a newly created variation of Coaches vs. Cancer program that will provide critical outreach, while raising funds in support of the American Cancer Society's lifesaving cancer research, education, advocacy, and community service efforts.
Union fans can bid on game worn jerseys by the Dutchwomen to support the cause on eBay through MissionFish, a fundraising tool on eBay. Bidding for all items will run through February 17th. Bidding for the jersey's starts at $150 dollars, or an option to "Buy it Now" for $250.
Senior Forwards Ashley Kilstein (Cherry Hill, NJ), Linnea Edwardson (Duluth, MN), and Courtney Chais (Plantation, FL), alongside defensemen Kristin Hissong (Littleton, CO) and Maeve Kehoe (Chelsea, QU) got the start in their final home game as Union College Dutchwomen hockey players. The class of ‘07-‘08 were honored following the game for their dedication and achievements to the program during their respective careers.
The Red Raiders first goal of the game came on the power-play at the 12:03 mark of the first period. Senior defensemen Mallory Johnston received a pass at the top of the slot from freshman Hannah Milan. Johnston then found a zone to shoot through and beat Union goalie Lundy Day (Calgary,AB) on the glove side. Colgate's second goal came when Hunt won a draw, poked the puck through the defense, and found a way to beat Day low on the stick side.
Union responded in the second period during a five on three power play for the second consecutive game. Freshman forward Marissa Gentile (Groton, MA) took a loose puck at the top of the left face off circle and beat Colgate netminder Lisa Plenderleith, who was screened in front. Colgate responded with Hunt's second goal of the night, a power-play goal, at 12:46. Freshman forward Jessi Waters tacked on the fourth Red Raiders goal of the game at 16:26 to make the final tally 4-1.
Day finished the game with 27 games in net for the Dutchwomen while Plenderleith had 9 saves to earn the victory.
