SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Cornell freshman forward Rebecca Johnston scored two goals as the Big Red went on to defeat the Union College Dutchwomen 3-2 in women's ECAC Hockey action Friday night. The Union College hockey team, ECAC Hockey, and the American Cancer Society laced up their skates together for Pink at the Rink Friday night at Messa Rink. Pink at the Rink is a newly created variation of Coaches vs. Cancer program that will provide critical outreach, while raising funds in support of the American Cancer Society's lifesaving cancer research, education, advocacy, and community service efforts.

Union fans can bid on game worn jerseys by the Dutchwomen to support the cause on eBay through MissionFish, a fundraising tool on eBay. Bidding for all items will run through February 17th. Bidding for the jersey's starts at $150 dollars, or an option to "Buy it Now" for $250.

Cornell jumped out to a 1-0 first period lead at 7:47. Freshman defender Amber Moore took a shot deep in the zone that Union goaltender Lundy Day (Calgary,AB) was able to stop. However, Day was unable to control the rebound and senior forward Brianna Schmidt skated in and was able to tip the loose rebound past Day. Day would go on to make 16 saves in the period as Cornell outshot the Dutchwomen 17-2.

The Big Red would jump out to a 2-0 lead in the second period on Johnston's first goal of the night. Johnston skated into the Union zone through two Dutchwomen defenders and was able to fake Day on a nice move, beating the goalie on her glove side at 2:43. Union would answer back on a five on three power-play at 15:10. Sophomore Brenna Malnar (Soughgate, MI) won a face off back to freshman Marissa Gentile (Groton, MA). Gentile took a wrist shot from the point that beat Cornell goalie Jenny Niesluchowski high on the glove side. The Big Red would answer back on a power-play of their own at 17:26. Sophomore defender Melanie Jue sent a pass to freshman Sam Wauer, who sent the puck along to Johnston. Johnston took a hard slap shot from the point that beat Day high to give the Big Red a 3-1 heading into the second intermission, and giving Johnston her second goal of the contest.

The Dutchwomen would cut the deficit to one goal at 15:09 on Malnar's second goal of the season. Malnar took the puck away from a Cornell defender in the Union zone and skated the length of the ice on a break away. Niesluchowski appeared to make the save but fell backwards into the net for a Dutchwomen goal. Union would pull Day with 1:47 remaining in the third. Malnar and senior defender Maeve Kehoe (Chelsea, QU) would each have opportunities to tie the game but Niesluchowski was up to the challenge to preserve the 3-2 win for the Big Red.

Day the finished the game with 39 saves for the Dutchwomen. Niesluchowski stopped 15 Dutchwomen shots to earn the victory for Cornell.

Union will celebrate its seniors tomorrow afternoon following a 4 pm game against ECAC Hockey rival Colgate in the Dutchwomen's final home game of the season.
