Thompson's Hat Trick Sparks Dartmouth
HAMDEN, Conn. -- Senior Carrie
Thompson (Shorewood, Minn.) netted her first career hat trick in
the second period to lead the offensive attack for the Dartmouth
women's hockey team as the Big Green powered past Quinnipiac, 6-0,
in ECAC Hockey action on Friday night.
Before tonight, Thompson had never scored more than one goal and
she had done that 18 times over her career here at Dartmouth. It
was the second time this season that a Dartmouth player had a hat
trick. Sophomore Jenna
Cunningham (Medicine Hat, Alta.) tallied three goals and three
assists for six points against Mercyhurst on Dec. 16 in a 6-4 win.
Thompson also added an assist for four points in the contest, which
is also a new career-high.
Sophomore Sarah
Toupal (White Bear Lake, Minn.) chipped in with a goal and an
assist, while sophomore Sarah
Parsons (Dover, Mass.) and junior Marley
McMillan (St. Paul, Minn.) added two assists apiece. For McMillan,
it was a career-high two assists.
After a scoreless opening period, the Big Green (14-7-5, 11-5-3
ECAC Hockey) came out firing in the second period, scoring five
goals. Thompson recorded a hat trick in the period, scoring the
first, third and fourth goals. Junior Maggie
Kennedy (West Hartford, Conn.) scored Dartmouth's second goal on a
slap shot that found its way past Quinnipiac netminder Tia Wishart
from just above the right circle. Toupal recorded an assist on
Thompson's third goal and then scored her first of the year just
1:53 later with only 13 seconds remaining in the period.
It was the second time this season Dartmouth has scored five goals
in a period. The Big Green did it in the opening period against
Cornell on Jan. 5 in an 8-0 win over the Big Red.
Quinnipiac (5-21-4, 2-13-4 ECAC Hockey) was able to kill off a
five-minute Dartmouth power play after Antoinette Maldonado was
called for checking from behind and assessed a game misconduct and
a major penalty. During those five minutes, the Bobcats actually
went on the power play after Dartmouth was called for two penalties
of their own, but neither team was able to score.
Junior Shannon
Bowman made it 6-0 nearly ten minutes into the third with a wrist
shot that beat new netminder Jamie Miller. Miller came into the
game at the start of the third, replacing Wishart who had allowed
all five second period goals. WIshart finished with 28 saves in two
periods of play, including 18 in the opening stanza.
Sohpomre Mariel
Lacina (London, Ont.) stopped all 22 Bobcat shots in the game for
her fifth win of the season and her third shutout of the
season.
Dartmouth went 1-5 on the man advantage, with Thompson tallying the
lone goals, and it was the fifth-straight game in which the Big
Green has been able to capitalize on at least one power play
opportunity. Quinnipiac had four power play opportunities, but
failed on all four.
The Big Green will travel south to face-off against Princeton at 4
p.m. in an important game with playoff implications. The Tigers are
two points behind the Big Green for the fourth spot, which is the
final home ice spot for the first round of the ECAC Hockey
tournament.
