Yale Edged by Princeton
NEW HAVEN, CT -- Annie Greenwood's power-play goal at 7:06 of
the third period lifted Princeton past Yale 2-1 Friday night at
Ingalls Rink. The Bulldogs outshot the Tigers 27-25, but Princeton
goaltender Kristen Young made 26 saves. Yale senior Shivon Zilis
made 23, and freshman forward Bray Ketchum accounted for the lone
Yale goal.
The Tigers hit the pipe twice in a matter of minutes midway through
the first period, and one bounced Yale's way and the other bounced
Princeton's. Greenwood's first shot hit off the post and into the
corner, but shortly after that she put another one on goal that hit
the pipe high on Zilis' glove side and ricocheted in.
The Bulldogs battled back with a hard-fought goal. After an initial
shot by Ketchum Young was unable to control the rebound, and
sophomore forward Caroline Murphy put the puck right back on net.
With Murphy and a defender barreling into her, Young hit the ice
and was unable to control the puck. Eight of the 10 skaters on the
ice jammed into the area in front of the crease looking for the
biscuit, and junior forward Sarah Tittman kept it alive for Ketchum
to slip it past Young at 16:19 to make it 1-1.
The second period saw just 12 total shots on goal as the score
remained the same. Zilis had to grab a backhander by Marykate
Oakley after she skated through the Yale defense midway through the
period. Right after that the Bulldogs got a power play, but Young
gloved a wrister by Ketchum to keep the score tied.
Zilis made a glove save on Brittany Salmon after a turnover in the
Yale zone with five minutes left in the second as the Bulldogs were
being called for a penalty. She then made a big save on Greenwood
and sophomore forward Mandi Schwartz finished off the penalty kill
with some forechecking that kept the Tigers in their own zone for
most of the final seconds.
In the third, a nice stick save by Young on a shot by junior
forward Maggie Westfal off a feed from Schwartz was followed
shortly by the Yale penalty that changed the game. Greenwood had to
lunge forward to knock a loose puck past Zilis, who had gotten a
piece of the initial shot by Salmon.
The last grade-A chance for the Bulldogs was a one-handed attempt
by Westfal, who was fighting off a defender, off a nice feed from
behind the net. Young got her right leg down to deny that one with
five minutes left. Yale pulled Zilis in the final moments, and had
a power play for the final 37 seconds, but could not tie the game
up.
With the loss the Bulldogs remain in a tie for 7th in
the ECAC Hockey standings with Cornell, which lost to Colgate. The
top eight teams make the playoffs.
The game marked the start of ECAC Hockey's "Pink at the Rink"
fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Yale wore
specially-designed pink jerseys, which will be auctioned to raise
money for cancer research at http://www.ecachockeycoachesvscancer.com/.
The promotion continues Saturday, when the Bulldogs host Quinnipiac
at 4:00. Admission is free, and pink t-shirts and rubber bracelets
will be on sale with proceeds going to cancer research.
