Clarkson Gets Past Cornell
ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Big Red women's hockey team
lost 5-3 to Clarkson at Lynah Rink Friday night during Pink At The
Rink weekend. The president of the Cornell chapter of the American
Cancer Society's Colleges vs. Cancer was present to drop the puck
at the opening of the game with each of the team's captains. The
Big Red wore pink sweaters and socks in support of Coaches vs.
Cancer. Game worn jerseys will be auctioned off on Mission Fish, an
Ebay subsidiary, to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
Freshman Rebecca Johnston scored her 12th goal of the
season 4:51 in the first period to give the Big Red an early lead.
Johnston stole the puck from a Clarkson forward and skated the
entire length of the ice sending the puck flying over the top of
goaltender Lauren Dahm. Clarkson's Melissa Waldie tied the
game at 15:24, and Marie-Jo Gaudet scored the go-ahead goal at
18:29 against freshman netminder Katie Wilson.
The Big Red's Kelly McGinty tied the game at two goals apiece at
2:52 of the second period. With a scuffle of players in front of
the Clarkson net, the puck was cleared to the top of the circles
where it found McGinty. The Big Red defender sent it past a gamut
of Golden Knights straight into the net. Seniors Brianne Schmidt
and Caeleigh Beerworth assisted on the goal.
A little over a minute later, Clarkson was on the power play when
Britney Selina gave Clarkson back its one-goal lead. Sophomore
goaltender Jenny Niesluchowski entered the game for the Big Red
after the goal.
Clarkson lengthened its lead once again at 18:21 of the second
period on Gaudet's second goal of the night. Thirty-one
seconds later, Johnston wound up for a slap shot that deflected off
Beerworth's stick straight past Dahm's shoulder.
Waldie scored her second goal of the game at 2:19 of the third
period to give the Golden Knights their final 5-3 lead.
The Big Red pulled Niesluchowski in favor of an extra attacker with
2:15 remaining in the game, but Cornell could not get the puck past
Dahm.
Niesluchowski made 19 saves in net for the Big Red, while Dahm made
22.
Cornell will face St. Lawrence at 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
