Colgate Cruises Past St. Lawrence
HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Sporting pink jerseys for Coaches vs. Cancer,
the Colgate University women's hockey team recorded a 5-2 win over
No. 6/7 St. Lawrence University at Starr Rink.
The Raiders were led by freshman Jacquie Colborne's (Calgary,
Alta.) two-goal performance and junior Sam Hunt's (Calgary, Alta.)
three-point effort. Junior Kiira Dosdall (Fairfield, Conn.) also
contributed with two assists.
The positive energy of supporting the American Cancer Society
translated to the Raider locker room as they scored four goals in
the opening period, to take a 4-1 lead. St. Lawrence added one in
the second but Colgate put the game away with a tally in the final
frame.
Sophomore Ali Edell (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) sparked the offense with
an unassisted marker at 7:14 of the first period. Edell skated up
the left side and sent a shot into the upper left 90 to give the
Raiders the lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Colborne scored a 5-on-3 power-play goal at 10:06 to extend the
lead. Sophomore Marissa Dombovy (Webster, N.Y.) has the puck down
in the left side and fed Dosdall at the top of the face-off circle.
Dosdall sent the puck across the ice to Hunt who rifled a shot
towards the net where Colborne redirected for the goal.
St. Lawrence cut the lead back to one when Carson Duggan swept the
puck across the slot to Sabrina Harbec who sent it into the bottom
left corner at 13:05.
Just over four minutes later, Colborne scored the eventual game
winner. Hunt found Colborne open in the neutral zone on the right
side and sent the puck down the ice. A Saint caught up to her and
tried to not allow her a shot off, but she nailed the puck as she
was taken down and it flew past goaltender Meaghan Guckian to light
the lamp.
Sophomore Beth Rotenberg (Toronto, Ont.) knocked in a Hannah Milan
(Great Barrington, Mass.) pass just 63 seconds later to give
Colgate a 4-1 lead.
St. Lawrence's Kerri Wallace scored the only goal of the second
period after a scrum in front of the net. Tara Akstull had the puck
on the left side and sent the puck across the paint to Wallace who
went five-hole on netminder Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax, Ont.).
Hunt sealed the Raider victory with another 5-on-3 goal just 31
seconds into the third period. Junior Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.)
fed the puck to Dosdall at the point, and Dosdall found Hunt open
for the shot.
Colgate went 2-for-6 on the power-play and held fourth-ranked Saint
power-play scoreless, going 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.
Plenderleith, the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week, made 26 saves,
while the ECAC Goaltender of the Week made 12 saves in the loss.
Colgate will face Clarkson on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 4 p.m. The Golden
Knights posted a 5-3 win over Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y., tonight. The
game will be televised live on Time Warner Sports, local channel
26.
