Princeton tops Dutchwomen

PRINCETON, NJ -- The Union College women's hockey team fell at Princeton, 7-0, in ECAC Hockey action Saturday afternoon. The Dutchwomen, led by 41 saves by junior netminder Lundy Day (Calgary, Alb.) drop to 3-21-0 and 0-14-2 in league play.  

Princeton (11-8-4, 9-6-1 ECAC) scored just one goal on 20 first-period shots, a tally within the last minute of the frame by Christine Foster.  

The Tigers exploded for four goals in the middle frame, courtesy of four different scorers. Brittany Salmon and Sasha Sherry edged the Tigers ahead to a 3-0 lead less than five minutes into the stanza. Salmon picked up her eighth goal of the season at 2:40, and Sherry added a power-play score less than two minutes later. Princeton finished the game 2-for-5 on the power play.   Sonja Novak and Micol Martinelli also added goals less than two minutes apart midway through the second, with Novak's coming on the power play.  

The Tigers struck early in the third period, but the Dutchwomen held them to eight shots in the frame, while registering six of their own. Julie Flynn extended Princeton's lead to six less than two minutes into the frame before Annie Greenwood capped the scoring at 9:21.  

Day made 41 saves, including 19 and 16 in the first and second periods respectively. Kristen Young earned the shutout win with nine saves.  

Union continues its ECAC Hockey road trip with games at Harvard and Dartmouth on February 8 and 9 before returning home for its final home games of the season against Colgate and Cornell on February 15-16.
