Golden Knights Gain Point, Tie St. Lawrence
CANTON, N.Y. -- A stingy defensive effort, backboned in goal by freshman Laura Dahm (Baldwinsville, NY), and some timely offense enabled the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team to gain a key point in ECAC Hockey play with a 2-2 tie at 6th-ranked St. Lawrence on Saturday night before 933 fans at Appleton Arena in Canton.
The Golden Knights, who entered the weekend series against their North Country neighbor ranked 9th in the nation, own a 18-6-4 overall record. Clarkson stands in a third-place tie in ECAC Hockey with a 9-5-2 conference slate. The Green and Gold travel to Central NY this coming weekend to battle Cornell and Colgate before closing out the regular season with a four-game home stand.
After losing to St. Lawrence 3-1 on Friday at Cheel Arena, Clarkson fell into an early hole against the Saints in the second game of the weekend. Just 2:30 into the first period, St. Lawrence went up 1-0 on a goal by Lisa Batchelor.
The Knights battle back, however with a pair of goals to hold a 2-1 lead after the opening 20 minutes. Senior assistant captain Brooke Beazer (Kingston, ONT) tallied off an assist from junior Marie-Jo Gaudet (Sherbrooke, QUE) at 5:26 for her fourth goal of the season to tie the score.
With 1:36 left in the first, sophomore Britney Selina (Thornhill, ONT) connected on the power play for her 14th goal of the season to give Clarkson the one-goal advantage. Sophomore Genevieve Lavoie (Delson, QUE) and junior defenseman Kimberly McKenney (Smiths Falls, ONT) set up the go-ahead goal.
The Knights, benefiting from five power-play opportunities in the middle frame, had plenty of opportunity to add to their lead. Clarkson, however, despite out shooting the Saints 16-5 in the stanza, was not able to put another goal on the scoreboard. The Knights' best chance pad their lead came late in the period when they skated with a two-man advantage for nearly the final five minutes.
St. Lawrence (20-7-1, 13-2-1) tied the game midway through the third period on Karell Emard's unassisted goal at 10:31.
The Saints had an excellent opportunity to pull out the victory on their home ice, with power-play chances late in regulation, and midway through the five-minute overtime session, but Clarkson was able to kill off both man advantages.
The Knights out shot St. Lawrence 34-28. Making her 10th start of the season, Dahm finished with 26 saves, including 12 in the first period. Clarkson was 1-of-11 on the power play, while the Saints were scoreless in their three opportunities with the extra skater.
