HAMDEN, CT -- Behind a three power play goal night, including two from junior forward Jamie-Lynn Stewart (Cambridge, ON/Cambridge Jr. Fury) the Rensselaer women's hockey team defeated Quinnipiac, 4-0, in ECAC Hockey action this afternoon. The Engineers improve to 12-11-4 overall and 5-8-3 in the league. The Bobcats fall to 4-20-4 and 1-12-3.
RPI broke out early in the first period as Stewart tallied her third and fourth goals of the season. Off a tip from junior Melanie Guillemette (North Bay, ON/Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres), she buried the puck in to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Whitney Naslund (Bloomington, MN/Bloomington Jefferson) and senior Brooke Thompson (Rochester, NY/Rochester Edge) earned the assists on Stewart's second tally, a scramble in front which the center was able to get her stick on.
The Engineers took a 3-0 lead later in the period off a goal by junior Nicole McDonald (Ottawa, ON/Ottawa Raiders), who scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season, off a rebound shot by sophomore Laura Gersten (Queensbury, NY/Troy-Albany Ice Cats). Classmate Allison Wright (Oakville, ON/Oakville Ice) earned the secondary assist.
Closing out the scoring in the third period was sophomore Allysen Weidner (Wichita, KS/Shattuck St. Mary's), who took advantage of an empty Bobcats' net for her eighth goal of the year. Seniors Kelly Barbera (Nesconset, NY/Gunnery School) and Ellen McNamara (Macomb, MI/Little Caesars U-19) were credited with the assists.
In goal, freshman Sonja van der Bliek (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros) picked up her ninth win of the year to improve to 9-4-2 on the season, stopping all 30 shots she faced.
Rensselaer is back in action next weekend when they travel to Dartmouth and Harvard on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (4pm), respectively.
