Tigers Spread The Wealth In 7-0 Home Victory
PRINCETON, NJ -- Seven different players scored a goal Saturday afternoon as the Princeton women's hockey team defeated Union College 7-0 at Baker Rink. Senior Micol Martinelli recorded her first career goal in the win, while junior Kristen Young needed only nine saves to record the shutout in Princeton's fourth straight win.
Princeton improved to 11-8-4, 9-6-1 in the ECAC, while Union fell to 3-21-2, 0-14-2 in league play.
The Tigers blistered Union goalie Lundy Day with 20 shots in the first period, but they nearly left empty-handed. Junior Christine Foster made sure it wouldn't happen, though, as she took a pass from senior captain Lizzie Keady on a power play and scored her fifth goal of the season with 48 seconds remaining.
That opened the floodgates for Princeton, which scored four goals in the first 11:09 of the second period to take total control of the game. After Brittany Salmon and Sasha Sherry scored in the first five minutes, senior Sonja Novak took the puck by herself, skated in behind the net and swept in the puck under Day's left pad. The goal trickled in just before the referee blew his whistle to stop play, and Princeton had a 4-0 lead.
Martinelli had her first score less than two minutes later, as she took a pass from Salmon along the right boards, skated in front of Day and fired her shot into the left side of the goal. Julie Flynn and Annie Greenwood added third-period goals to finish off a 7-0 win, matching the same score Princeton defeated Union by in their previous regular-season meeting.
Princeton will head to New England next weekend to take on Yale and Brown.
