Bobcats Earn First League Win

Box Score

HAMDEN, CT -- Quinnipiac women's ice hockey recorded their first ECAC Hockey win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Union, Friday night at the TD Banknorth Sports Center. Elyse Cole (Belleville, Ont.) scored both Bobcat goals, including the game-winner with 30 seconds remaining in the contest. Quinnipiac is now 1-11-3 in ECAC play and 4-19-4 overall. Union remains winless in conference games at 0-13-2 and an overall record of 3-20-2 this season.

After a scoreless first period that saw the Bobcats outshoot the Dutchwomen 11-3, Union grabbed a 1-0 lead 1:16 into the second period on Courtney Chias' fourth goal of the season. Chias scored after Quinnipiac goaltender Tia Wishart (Vanvouver Isalnd, B.C.) kicked out Linnea Edwardson's shot from the point to the side of the net where the Union forward was waiting for the rebound.

Quinnipiac recorded their first goal against the Dutchwomen this season on Cole's power-play goal at 11:55 of the middle frame. Cole picked up a loose puck from Trudy Reyns' (Port Hope, Ont.) blocked shot and wristed the puck past Union's goalie Lundy Day to tie the game, 1-1. The goal was Cole's tenth of the season, while Reyns and Kallie Flor (Farmington, Minn.) both picked up their eighth assists on the goal.

Quinnipiac dominated the third period, out-shooting Union, 14-5. Union had their best scoring opportunity of the period on a breakaway by Suzy Pocock with 1:40 left. Pocock broke out of the defensive zone before receiving a pass at center ice and streaking in on the Bobcats' netminder. Wishart knocked the puck away with her glove after Pocock brought the puck to her forehand while shielding a back-checking Bobcat defender before getting the shot away.

Cole scored the game-winner with 30 seconds left in the game on a turn-around wrist-shot. She picked up the puck in the left corner and skated into the slot, using her body to shield off a Union defender draped across her back. Cole got to the high slot before turning around and throwing a blind shot on net that beat Day between the post and her left pad for the goal.

Wishart recorded her first collegiate win and improves to 1-5-0 this season, while Day dropped to 2-19-2 this year.

The Bobcats finished the game out-shooting the Dutchwomen 35-19. Quinnipiac was 1-6 on the power play, while holding Union to 0-3 with the man advantage.

Quinnipiac returns to action tomorrow afternoon as the Rensselaer Engineers come to the TD Banknorth Sports Center. The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
