Quinnipiac Edges Dutchwomen
HAMDEN, CT -- The Union College women's hockey team was edged by Quinnipiac, 2-1, Friday night in ECAC Hockey action at the TD Banknorth Center. Courtney Chais (Plantation, Fla.) scored for the Dutchwomen, who drop to 3-20-2 overall and 0-13-2 in league play.
After a scoreless first period that saw the Bobcats outshoot the Dutchwomen 11-3, Union grabbed a 1-0 lead 1:16 into the second period on Chais's fourth goal of the season. She scored after Quinnipiac goaltender Tia Wishart kicked out a Linnea Edwardson (Duluth, Minn.) shot from the point to the side of the net where the Chais was waiting for the rebound.
Quinnipiac recorded its first goal against the Dutchwomen this season on Eylse Cole's power-play goal at 11:55 of the middle frame. Cole picked up a loose puck from Trudy Reyns' blocked shot and wristed the puck past Union goaltender Lundy Day (Calgary, Alb.) to tie the game, 1-1.
Quinnipiac dominated the third period, outshooting Union, 14-5. The Dutchwomen had their best scoring opportunity of the period on a breakaway by Suzy Pocock (Sterling Heights, Mich.) with 1:40 left. Pocock broke out of the defensive zone before receiving a pass at center ice and streaking in on the Bobcats' netminder. Pocock brought the puck to her forehand after shielding a back-checking Bobcat defender and got the shot off, but Wishart knocked the puck away with her glove.
Cole scored the game-winner with 30 seconds left in the game on a turn-around wrist-shot. She picked up the puck in the left corner and skated into the slot, using her body to shield off a Union defender draped across her back. Cole got to the high slot before turning around and throwing a blind shot on net that beat Day between the post and her left pad for the goal.
Wishart recorded her first collegiate win with 18 saves, while Day made 33 saves in the loss.
Union is back in action in a 4 p.m. Saturday game at Princeton.
