Power-Play Goals Push Big Red Past Colgate

Box Score

HAMILTON, NY -- The Big Red women's hockey team earned a 3-2 victory at Colgate on Friday night. The win marks the Big Red's first victory over Colgate since the 2001-02 season. Cornell improves to 10-10-1 for the season and 7-7-1 in ECAC Hockey, while the Raiders fall to 9-12-4 and 6-6-3 against league opponents.

With Colgate's Clancy Todd in the penalty box for interference, the Raiders' Sam Hunt evaded the Big Red defense scoring a shorthanded goal at 6:36 of the second period to give her team a 1-0 lead.  With Todd still in the box, sophomore Liz Zorn tied the game up, scoring a power-play goal at 7:11 of the second. The goal was assisted by freshmen Karlee Overguard and Liz Zorn.

Less than a minute later, senior co-captain Caeleigh Beerworth tied the game up with the game's first even strength goal. Fellow captain Brittany Forgues and freshman Hayley Hughes picked up the assists.   Colgate's Beth Rotenberg tied the game up at two goals apiece at 12:33 of the second with assists by Jessi Waters and Hannah Milan.

The Raiders were caught with an extra skater on the ice at 15:09 of the second period, and the Big Red took full advantage of its second power play opportunity.  Beerworth scored her second goal of the game at 15:40 to notch what would be Cornell's game-winning goal. Johnston and Karlee Overguard notched their second assists of the game.

Colgate pulled goaltender Lisa Plederleith for a total of 46 seconds in favor of an extra attacker at the end of the third, but the Raiders were unable to get the puck past sophomore goaltender Jenny Niesluchowski.   Niesluchowski made 36 saves in her fifth win of the season, while Plenderleith made 26.

Colgate will travel to Ithaca on Saturday for a 4 p.m. faceoff in Lynah Rink.
