Union Drops Exhibition Contest to Aeros

Box Score

SCHENECTADY, NY - The Toronto Junior Aeros went four-for-seven on the power play in a 6-2 exhibition win over Union Saturday afternoon at Messa Rink. Brenna Malnar (Soughgate, MI) scored both goals for the Dutchwomen, who are idle until January 4, when they play at RPI.

Kelly Babstock opened the scoring for the Aeros 3:23 into the game when she jammed in a rebound from Amber Welch. Heather Hughes followed with a power-play goal at 16:43. Nicole Pigeon sent a pass across the points to Heather Grant, who fed Hughes on the doorstep.

Union's Suzy Pocock (Sterling Heights, MI) fired off a trio of shots at the end of the period, but Aeros' netminder Lindsay Park kept the Dutchwomen off the board.

Malnar brought the Dutchwomen within one just 32 seconds into the second period, on the first shot of the frame. Marissa Gentile (Groton, MA) took a pass from Perri Maduri (Westford, MA) and fed Malnar as she entered the offensive zone on the right. Malnar dragged the puck across the crease before slipping it past Park.

Whitney Kennedy potted a power-play goal at 9:51 to extend the Aeros' lead to 3-1 before Jackie Koetteritz (Breckenridge, CO) broke up a centering pass in Union's zone and made an outlet pass to Callee Heywood (Innisfail, AB), who streaked up the right and put a shot on net with 7:16 remaining in the middle frame.

On a four-on-four in the third period, Gentile one-timed a pass from Pocock in the slot, but replacement netminder Nicole Paniccia got her leg on it just in time.

On the same four-on four, Kennedy jammed in a rebound from a Jenna Paulson shot for a three-goal lead at 8:16. Sasha Nanji added a power-play score from the right circle at 13:17.

Malnar collected a power-play goal at 15:41, with assists from Kelly Fleming (Lake Placid, NY) and Gentile. Fleming took a pass from Gentile and put her shot on net from a low angle below the left circle. Paniccia made the save, but Malnar found the rebound and slid it in at the near post.

Amber Welch capped the scoring for the Aeros, potting a rebound from Amanda Kirwan 18 seconds after Malnar's tally.

Danielle Kimble (Reston, VA) made 32 saves, while Park made seven saves in the first half of the game, and Paniccia stopped 11 shots in the remainder of the game.

The Dutchwomen are back in action on January 4 at RPI, and host the Engineers the following day at 4 p.m.
