Quinnipiac, Union Battle to Scoreless Draw

Boxscore

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Freshman goaltender Jamie Miller (Richmond Hill, Ont.) records her first collegiate shutout, but does not earn the win as the Women's Hockey team tied Union Saturday afternoon, 0-0. The tie makes the Bobcats' record 1-11-3 and 0-8-3 in the ECAC. Union is now 1-14-1 overall and 0-7-1 in ECAC play. The tie marked the first time Union was able to get a point in league play in 71 games.

The game was the first 0-0 tie in school history for either the men's or women's team. It was also only the second Quinnipiac hockey game to go into overtime tied at zero. The only other time was on Mar. 13, 2004 when the Men's Hockey team lost to Canisius, 1-0

This is the second weekend in a row that the Bobcats have played to a tie in a conference game after tying Colgate last Saturday, 1-1. Quinnipiac out-shot Union 44-18 in the game, including holding a 19-7 advantage in the second period. The Dutchwomen were only able to muster two shots in the final period, while the Bobcats put 12 shots on net.

Union appeared to take a 1-0 lead at 11:13 of the first period. However, referees ruled that Lauren Muske's rebound shot was kicked in past Miller; disallowing the goal and keeping the score tied, 0-0.

Quinnipiac's power play unit was unable to score for the second consecutive game as they were 0-4 on the afternoon. However, their penalty killing unit played well in holding Union without a power play goal on eight opportunities.

Freshman Kelley Davies (Chesapeake, Virg.) led all players with nine shots in the game. Three Bobcats had five shots on goal in the game. Defensemen Nicolette Leone (Trenton, Ont.) and Kristin Emerick (Stamford, Conn.) each had five shots from the blue line, while forward Elyse Cole (Belleville, Ont.) was unable to build on her team-leading five goals on any of her five shots in the game.

The Bobcats could not score with a two-player advantage late in the third and were stopped on eight shots in the final 2:30 of the third period.

Colgate's Lundy Day played outstanding in goal turning away all 44 Bobcat shots in the game, including four in the overtime period. Union put two shots on net in OT that Miller turned away to preserve the tie.

All three Quinnipiac ties this season have come in ECAC play. Other than the tie last weekend at Colgate, the Bobcats played to a 2-2 tie at Princeton Oct. 21. Saturday's game was also the first time this season the Bobcats have been held scoreless.

The Quinnipiac Women's Hockey team has three weeks off before they return to action Dec. 29 as they host the Nutmeg Classic at the TD Banknorth Sports Center. Quinnipiac plays Connecticut at 7 p.m., while Niagra and Yale face off in the early game at 3 p.m. The games continue Sunday, Dec. 30 with the Consolation and Championship games at 3 and 7.
