Colgate One Goal Better Than Niagara
HAMILTON, N.Y. -- The Colgate University
women's hockey team scored two goals in the first five minutes of
the third period to take a 2-1 game from Niagara University on
Friday, Dec. 7 at Starr Rink.
Junior Kiira Dosdall (Fairfield, Conn.) tied the game with a
power-play tally just 1:48 into the third period and classmate Sam
Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) scored the game winner two minutes and 54
seconds later.
Shannon Moulson put the Purple Eagles on the scoreboard midway
through the first period. Mallory Yorkson brought the puck off the
boards and gave it to Moulson who set up inside the right face-off
circle, with a player positioned on the left side waiting for a
redirect. Goaltender Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax, Ont.) slid to the
left side in an effort to stop Moulson's shot but the puck slipped
between her skates at 10:37.
The second period was held scoreless with both Plenderleith and
Niagara's Jill Zelonis coming up with some big stops.
Colgate outshot Niagara 25-15 in the first two periods, and despite
coming up short 10-7 in shots in the third, the Raiders were able
to net two goals.
Hunt had the puck on the left side and finding her path to the net
blocked she fed Dosdall the puck in the slot and Dosdall sent it
over the glove of Zelonis at 1:48 of the final frame. Sophomore
Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) received the second assist on the
goal.
Minutes later, Colgate took the lead as Hunt buried the puck into
the back of the netting. Sophomore Beth Rotenberg (Toronto, Ont.)
and Ali Edell (Madison, N.J.) were credited with setting up the
game-winning goal.
Plenderleith finished the night with 24 saves, while Zelonis made
30 saves.
Colgate was 1-for-5 on the power play and was 5-for-5 on the
penalty kill.
Colgate will look for the sweep of Niagara when the two squads
battle it out on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 4 p.m.
