Big Red Downs Princeton, Completes Weekend Sweep
ITHACA, N.Y.-The Big Red women's hockey team defeated Princeton, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon to complete its series sweep of the Tigers for the first time since the 1995-96 season. Sophomore Liz Zorn notched a goal and two assists to total seven points for the weekend. Zorn had a hand in every goal the Big Red scored during the weekend. Cornell lengthened its win-streak to four games to move to 7-4-1 overall and 4-1-1 in ECAC Hockey. Freshman Rebecca Johnston opened scoring for the Big Red at 7:39 of the first period. Classmate Karlee Overguard grabbed the puck taking it behind the Princeton net. Overguard passed the puck to Johnston at the left side of the net and netting a quick shot, the Big Red took a 1-0 lead. Zorn also assisted on the goal.
At 17:56 of the first period, Johnston was in front of the Tigers' net and passed the puck out to freshman defenseman Sam Wauer on the blueline. Wauer rifled a slapshot that deflected off of Zorn's stick right into goaltender Kristen Young's net. Cornell retained its two-goal lead until 13:48 of the second period when Marykate Oakley put the Tigers on the board during a power play. Brittany Salmon and Sasha Sherry assisted on the goal.
Less than a minute later, Cornell once again had control of the puck in the Princeton zone. Karlee Overguard won the face off which deflected off of Zorn's stick back to freshman Amber Moore. Moore wound up for a huge slap shot that Young blocked, but the rebound trickled over the line to put Cornell up 3-1. With four seconds left in the second period Tiger defenseman Maddie Endicott shot the puck from outside the blueline straight over Big Red goaltender Jenny Niesluchowski's shoulder to put Princeton within one.
Cornell fended off the Princeton attack during the third period to skate away with a 3-2 victory.
Niesluchowski made 24 saves in her third win of the season. Young made 15 saves in the loss.
Cornell will break for the holiday season, but will return to action in the new year to play at Harvard and Dartmouth Jan. 4-5.
