Bears Edged by Clarkson
Providence, RI - In a span of 2:47 in the
second period, Clarkson scored two power play goals to take the
lead for good, as the Brown women's hockey team (1-10-1, 1-6-1 ECAC
Hockey) fell to the Golden Knights, 2-1, at Meehan Auditorium on
Saturday. Senior Hayley Moore (Wakefield, MA) scored to bring the
Bears within one, but the equalizer was nowhere to be found. Junior
Nicole Stock (Buffalo Grove, IL) finished with 37 saves, her eighth
game with 30 or more saves in 11 starts.
Most of the game's action came in the second period. In the first
period, the teams combined for 12 shots and two penalties, although
even fewer of the shots were legitimate scoring chances. In the
third, there were no penalties called, although 19 shots were
taken.
Clarkson got on the board 3:21 into the second with a bit of luck.
Defenseman Amanda Dittmer took a shot from the right point that was
headed wide, but it went off of Brown freshman Macie Winship
(Shrewsbury, MA) right in front of the net and past the helpless
Stock. The Golden Knights doubled their lead at 6:08, when
sophomore Genevieve Lavoie stuffed home the puck as it sat in the
crease following a save by Stock on a Melissa Waldie shot.
Brown was able to answer quickly at 8:25. On a power play of their
own, the Bears worked the puck around to Moore, who found the top
shelf on the left side for her third goal of the season. Sophomore
forward Erin Connors (Newburyport, MA) and freshman defenseman
Erica Kromm (Naramata, BC) both picked up their second assist of
the year on the goal.
Stock played another solid game between the pipes, making several
highlight-reel saves to keep the Bears in the game, including a few
breakaway attempts. She also got some help from her defense,
including one nifty poke check by senior Heather Lane (London, ONT)
to break up what would have been another breakaway chance.
Stock's counterpart, freshman Eve Grandmont-Berube, made 16 saves
to pick up the victory.
Next weekend, the Bears will play their final game of 2007, when
they travel to Yale on Sunday for a 2 p.m. game.
