Dartmouth Advances to Semifinals With Sweep of Colgate
HANOVER, NH -- The 10th-ranked Dartmouth women's hockey team got
goals from four different skaters to sweep Colgate in the first
round of the ECAC Hockey Tournament with a 4-2 win on Saturday
afternoon at Thompson Arena.
Sophomore Sarah
Parsons (Dover, Mass.) continued her impressive play with a goal
and an assist, while freshman Amanda
Trunzo (Andover, Minn.) tallied her second goal in as many games
and added an assist. Junior Sarah
Newnam (Clifton, Va.) gave the Big Green two assists and classmate
Carli
Clemis (Taber, Atla.) made 34 stops, including 25 in the final two
periods, to earn her sixth postseason victory and her 13th of the
season.
Junior Shannon
Bowman got Dartmouth on the board first with eighth of the season
with the assists going to Parsons and Newnam, just three minutes
into the game. Newnam fired a shot from the point that Colgate
goaltender Lisa Plenderleith stopped, but Bowman was there for the
put back and the 1-0 lead.
Dartmouth (18-7-6, 15-5-4 ECAC Hockey) increased its lead to 2-0 as
Parsons netted her third in two games with 7:27 remaining in the
opening period. Newman sent a cross-ice pass to Parsons who beat
her defender to the inside and went top-shelf from the slot, to
push the lead to two.
In the second period, Trunzo got into the act with her second goal
in the postseason and her 11th of her rookie campaign. Senior
captain Nicole
Ruta (Pickering, Ont.) took a shot from the point that was tipped
nicely by Trunzo and past Plenderleith on the glove side to give
Dartmouth a commanding 3-0 advantage. Ruta was credited with one of
her two assists on the night.
The fourth and final Dartmouth goal of the night came from senior
Carrie
Thompson (Shorewood, Minn.) who netted her 12th of the season.
Ruta, once again in the mix, found Thompson and she fired a shot
that glanced off Plenderleith's glove and into the net.
Colgate's Sam Hunt would single-handedly put the Raiders back into
the game with back-to-back tallies in the third period. Her first
came 1:33 into the period to cut the lead to 4-1 and her second
came with three minutes remaining in the game. But it was too late
as the Big Green remained unbeaten in its last 10 games, to advance
to the ECAC Hockey semifinals.
Plenderleith made 26 saves for the Raiders, including 21 in the
first two periods, while Clemis pushed aside 34 Colgate shots.
The Raiders (12-17-5, 9-11-4 ECAC Hockey) outshot the Big Green,
36-30, in the game and held the advantage in the final two periods.
Dartmouth was 1-3 on the power play, while Colgate finished
0-5.
Dartmouth will be in action next Saturday against St. Lawrence in
the ECAC Hockey semifinals from the Bright Center at Harvard, with
the time to be announced. Stay tuned to DartmouthSports.com to find
