Princeton Sweeps Again; Harvard Also Takes Two

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Princeton added to its early-season lead in the ECAC Hockey League standings over the weekend by sweeping its opponents. Harvard also earned four points, earning one of its wins in overtime. Colgate added some excitement to the weekend mix, taking the nationally ranked Crimson to overtime before downing top 5 ranked Dartmouth. The Big Green, Rensselaer and Quinnipiac also earned weekend splits, while Yale claimed victory in its lone league contest.

For the Tigers, their season-opening unbeaten streak reached eight games with its sweep of Union and Rensselaer. And, it marks the best start in Princeton history. Kim Pearce and Melanie Wallace combined for nine points on the weekend to lead the Orange and Black. Pearce had six of them on her own with five helpers and the game-winning goal vs. Rensselaer.

Harvard went to overtime vs. Colgate for its first win of the weekend and followed it up with a victory against Cornell. The Raiders went ahead on a goal by Sam Hunt but the Crimson was able to tie it back up with a Jennifer Sifers tally less than two minutes later. In overtime, Jenny Brine netted the winner just 1:39 into the extra period. The next day, five players had two points in the win vs. Cornell, including two goals by Liza Solley. Overall, the Crimson was led by Player of the Week Katie Johnston, who had two goals and two assists over the two wins.

While Harvard was able to come back in OT against Colgate, the Raiders were able to come back the next day with a 2-1 victory vs. Dartmouth. It marked the Raiders first-ever win over the Big Green. Elin Brown scored the winner at 11:38 in the third period. Elayna Hamashuk, the Goaltender of the Week, was solid in net for Colgate, stopping a total of 60 shots. Her first career start was against Harvard, where she made 28 saves, and she followed it up with 32 saves in the W vs. Dartmouth.

Dartmouth, Rensselaer and Quinnipiac all earned two points with single league victories. Dartmouth earned its points win a win over Cornell, while Yale defeated Brown, RPI downed Quinnipiac and the Bobcats beat Union. The Engineers' win was their first in ECACHL play, and the history books have Julie Aho's name written in them as the player who netted the winner.

Brown played one league game and one non-league game last week. Although the team lost both, freshman Andrea Hunter was a solid performer and earned Rookie of the Week honors after scoring a short-handed goal vs. ranked Boston College and adding an assist vs. Yale.

In other non-league games, Yale earned a 3-2 win early in the week over Providence and Clarkson claimed two wins vs. Robert Morris. St. Lawrence headed north and battled New Hampshire to a 1-all tie day one, before being shut out in game two.

Johnston scored four points on the weekend. She figured in the Crimson's first two goals in the 4-3 OT win vs. Colgate and then scored the GWG in a wild third period in the 5-2 win against Cornell.

Hamashuk stopped 60 of the 65 shots she faced over the weekend in taking No. 8 Harvard to OT and downing No. 4 Dartmouth.

ECACHL Rookie of the Week
ANDREA HUNTER -- Brown

Hunter had two points on special teams last week, including a short-handed goal against top 10 ranked Boston College.

TEAM NOTES

Brown: Five of the Bears' seven losses have come by just one goal, including their two last week to No. 10 BC and Yale ... Andrea Hunter and Amanda Asay became the fourth and fifth Brown freshmen to score their first career goals last week ... Freshmen have 13 of Brown's 21 points and six of the team's 11 goals. Juniors have six points and sophomores have two, while no senior has a point yet.

Clarkson: The Golden Knights begin a four-game road trip this weekend with a weekend set against Wayne State in Detroit . Stephanie Hansen got her first two starts of the season in the Clarkson goal in the place of the Knights injured All-American goaltender Kira Hurley . Clarkson broke out of a 162:04 scoreless drought with a 5-on-3 PPG on Friday vs. Robert Morris when Ashley Shaidle tallied her 44th career goal, the most ever for the Knights.

Colgate: Colgate went 1-1, taking No. 8 Harvard to OT and upsetting No. 4 Dartmouth 2-1. It was the first time in series history that Colgate beat the Big Green, and it was the first time since 2001 that Colgate has taken Harvard to OT ... It was a sophomore showcase with Sam Hunt leading Colgate with three goals. Defender Kiira Dosdall had three assists and Elin Brown scored the GWG against Dartmouth. In net, Elayna Hamashuk made 60 saves and held the opponents to five goals.

Cornell: The Big Red returns home this weekend after playing four games on the road. Cornell will look to snap a four game losing streak ... In the net for the Big Red for the last three games has been freshman Jenny Niesluchowski. The rookie will be looking to earn her first collegiate win. Sophomore Steph Ulrich led the Big Red in points this weekend with three including a goal and two assists.

Dartmouth: The Big Green, after knocking off Cornell 7-1, took their first league loss on Saturday at the hands of Colgate ... It is the first time in program history that the Raiders have beaten Dartmouth ... The Big Green were without their top line for the weekend, as Sarah Parsons, Cherie Piper and captain Gillian Apps were competing for their countries in the Four Nations Cup.

Harvard: Harvard is off to a 5-1-0 start through six games. It is the fourth time in the last five years that the Crimson has had at least five wins through six games ... Harvard meets Brown Friday in a rematch of the 2006 ECACHL championship game. The Crimson has an 11-game unbeaten streak against the Bears, which includes two ties last year ... Harvard has 17 different players score at least one point this season.

Princeton: Princeton's season-opening unbeaten streak reached eight games with its sweep of Union and Rensselaer. It marks the best start in Princeton history. Princeton was unbeaten in five games to start the 1979-80, 1980-81 and 1994-95 season ... Princeton has earned 13 of a possible 14 points in league games this season. The Tigers have outscored their opponents 30-15 in league games.

Quinnipiac: After accounting for 59.3 percent of the team's scoring production as freshmen last season, the current sophomore class has picked up right where they it off and has accounted for 60 percent of the Bobcats' scoring this year ... Quinnipiac's 28 goals have come from 11 different players and 15 players have at least a point.

Rensselaer: The Engineers defeated Quinnipiac 5-1 this past Friday to capture their first ECAC Hockey League win. Junior Julie Aho netted two goals, one a short handed marker and added an assist in the victory ... Through 13 games, 14-of-19 players have tallied a point, including 13 with multiple points.

St. Lawrence: After a tough outing vs. UNH, the Saints record against ranked opponents now stands at 3-3-1. The Scarlet and Brown got a third period goal off the stick of junior Sabrina Harbec to help earn a 1-1 tie in Saturday's series opener. However, in Sunday's rematch, it was all New Hampshire, as the home team blanked the Saints 4-0, the first time SLU has been held scoreless this season.

Union: Union's four goals against Quinnipiac mark the most the Dutchwomen have scored in a league game since joining the ECACHL ... Elise Nichols leads the team 13 points on 10 goals and three assists and leads the league in goal scoring ... The Dutchwomen are off until November 25-26.

Yale: With two wins this past week, Yale has now won four of its last five games . Sheila Zingler scored the game-winner with 5:32 to play against Providence and now has a point in five of her last six games . Six senior Bulldogs -- Regan Gilbride, Kelsey Johnson, Kristin Savard, Christina Sharun, Jenna Spring and Sheila Zingler, reached the 100-game mark for their careers this past week.
