Saints Win Two; Quinnipiac's Jaffray Sets NCAA Mark
ALBANY, N.Y. -- All of the women's teams in the ECAC Hockey League are in action, with several out-of conference games, exhibitions and scrimmages taking place this past week. St. Lawrence remains perfect on the year after winning both of its games over the weekend, while Quinnipiac also picked up a victory, and Clarkson earned a tie. Colgate, Rensselaer and Union also had regular-season games on their slates.
The Saints were on the road for its two recent wins, picking up Ws against Providence and Connecticut. Goaltender Meaghan Guckian earned her eighth career shutout vs. the Huskies and stopped a total of 53 shots over the two games.
Quinnipiac's victory was also on the road, a 5-2 contest at Northeastern. Senior Ashley Jaffray made a little history with two short-handed goals just 18 seconds apart, which is the new NCAA women's hockey record for all divisions. It was also a special day for senior netminder Laura Brennan, as it was her first Bobcat victory between the pipes.
Clarkson battled No. 3 Mercyhurst on the road and tied the Lakers 3-all on Saturday after a Friday night loss. Freshman Britney Selina had a hand in all three goals on Saturday, assisting on each one. Junior Katie Morrison scored two of those markers.
Rensselaer played tough at Boston University, going to overtime in game one, and falling by a goal in game two. Freshman Allysen Weidner had both goals in the OT loss, including the tying goal, which came on the power play. On Saturday, sophomore Jamie-Lynn Stewart scored the Engineer's lone goal, a short-handed effort.
Colgate's two games were also on the road, and the Raiders fell twice. Junior defender Mallory Johnston paced the Raiders over the weekend, collecting two assists and freshman Ali Edell collected her first collegiate goal vs. Providence.
Three exhibition games also took place over the weekend. Cornell split its weekend contests with the Durham Lightning, while Brown downed the East Coast Wizards.

Jaffray set a NCAA women's ice hockey record for all divisions when
she scored two short-handed goals just 18 seconds apart on the same
shift. It was also the first multi-goal game of her career.

Guckian stopped 53 of 54 shots this weekend, earning two wins. Her
shutout vs. UConn was the ninth of her career.

Forward * Thornhill, Ont.
Selina picked up four points (1g, 3a) at No. 3 Mercyhurst. She
tallied a PPG on Friday and set up three goals on Saturday.
TEAM NOTES
Brown: Brown had its first exhibition on Saturday, defeating the East Coast Wizards, 6-2 ... Six different players scored in the win, including captains Hayley Moore and Lauren Deeb ... The Bears' three goaltenders -- Stacy Silverman, Nicole Stock and O'Hara Shipe -- split the three periods ... Brown opens its season on Friday at No. 2 UNH. Last year, the teams split a home-and-home to start Brown's year, during which the Bears gave the Wildcats their only regulation loss during the season, a 3-2 decision at Meehan Auditorium.
Clarkson: Rookie Britney Selina has recorded at least one point in each of the first four games and leads Clarkson in scoring with seven points (3-4) ... Katie Morrison, playing her first games of the season, made a big impact with four points in the series at Mercyhurst, including two goals in Saturday's tie ... Clarkson's all-time leading scorer, Ashley Shaidle is returning to form after suffering through a preseason illness and netted the tying goal on Saturday.
Colgate: Junior defender Mallory Johnston paced the Raiders over the weekend, collecting two assists ... Freshman Ali Edell collected her first collegiate goal on Sunday versus Providence ... Colgate's combined special teams are tied for 7th (with Boston U.) in the nation at 57.1 percent.
Cornell: Cornell opened exhibition play last weekend when it met Durham Jr. West at home in the newly renovated Lynah Rink ... All three of the Big Red's goaltenders saw action between the pipes for a period a piece each game ... Three players had multiple points; Halina Kristalyn had three, Molly McDonald two and Emma Chipman two ... The Big Red opens its season this Friday vs. Niagara.
Dartmouth: The Dartmouth women's hockey team opens its regular season this upcoming weekend on the road as it travels to Mercyhurst to take on the Lakers in two games. The Big Green have never lost to Mercyhurst, as they hold a 5-0-1 record over the Lakers.
Harvard: Julie Chu and Jennifer Sifers will serve as co-captains this year ... Sixteen letter winners return to the Crimson lineup including Olympians Caitlin Cahow, Sarah Vaillancourt and Chu ... Harvard's first action of the year is an exhibition contest on Oct. 21 vs. McGill.
Princeton: Princeton opens its season this weekend at Boston College ... The Tigers return two first-team All-ECACHL selections from last season, seniors Laura Watt and Kim Pearce ... Princeton will welcome back junior Liz Keady for the 2006-07 season. Keady took last season off to train with the U.S. National Team and was one of the final cuts for the 2006 Olympic team.
Quinnipiac: Ashley Jaffray's two short-handed goals on the same shift in just 18 seconds set a NCAA record. It was the first multi-goal game of her career and the first time in program history an individual player scored two-short-handed goals in an entire season ... Laura Brennan became the third goaltender in program history to assist on a goal.
Rensselaer: Through the first five games of the season, 10 of 19 players have tallied a point or more for Rensselaer, including six players with multiple points ... The Engineers play at home this coming weekend and are 11-2-1 within the confines of the Houston Field House dating back to the 2005-06 season opener ... On the season, Rensselaer has outshot its opponent 138-98, including 54 shots on goal against the Terriers last weekend.
St. Lawrence: Sophomore forward Carson Duggan is off to a quick and consistent start this season, having collected a point in every game (3g, 2a) ... Junior goaltender Meaghan Guckian bounced back nicely this weekend after a tough outing against Wayne State on Oct. 6. Guckian stopped 53-of-54 shots this past weekend as the Saints rolled to a pair of road victories.
Union: The Dutchwomen's 3-2 loss Sunday marks the closest game in an opening weekend since a 2-1 loss to Clarkson on 10/16/04 ... Union hosts Sacred Heart in a two-game series this weekend before playing the next six games on the road ... Alex Zirbel ranks second among ECACHL goaltenders with a .919 save percentage.
Yale: Sophomore defenseman Helen Resor returns to Yale after spending last season with Team USA ... Ten of Yale's top 11 scorers from last season return, including leading scorer Crysti Howser (12-14-26) ... Yale's freshman class includes Olympian Denise Soesilo. Soesilo, a forward, helped Germany to its best finish ever at the Olympics -- fifth.
