Half of the ECACHL Women Have Hit The Ice So Far

St. Lawrence picks up two wins over weekend

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The ECAC Hockey League's North Country teams are off to a good start, as both St. Lawrence and Clarkson are 2-0-0 at the early point in the season. The Saints earned its two wins over the weekend vs. Wayne State, while Clarkson earned its two last week. Colgate, Quinnipiac, Rensselaer and Union also played games over the weekend.

St. Lawrence saw three rookies collect their first collegiate points in the team's home-opening wins and also had a junior reach a milestone. Returning Player of the Year Sabrina Harbec had three points on Friday and two more on Saturday to give her 102 in her career. Junior Meaghan Guckian and freshman Maxie Weisz both saw time in goal, with each earning a win.

Colgate and Rensselaer were both on the road for two games this past weekend. The Raiders dropped their first game to Niagara, but came back to tie the Purple Eagles 1-1 the next day. Sam Hunt scored the team's lone goal in the tie, a power-play marker. The Engineers faced a tough North Dakota squad and dropped both games out west.

Quinnipiac stayed on the east coast, but was shut out by Boston College. Union started the year off with two exhibition games, facing Canada's Brock University at home. The Dutchwomen fell in game one, but finished game two in a 1-all tie, their lone goal coming from Meagan Beck.

TEAM NOTES

Brown: Brown opens its season with an exhibition contest on October 14 ... Nine rookies will be on this year's roster ... Forward Hayley Moore returns for her junior season after leading the Bears in scoring last year with 43 points.

Clarkson: Clarkson shutout the Aurora Jr. Panthers 5-0 in an exhibition game at Cheel Arena on Saturday ... The Knights, at 2-0, take to the road for the first time with a two-game series at Mercyhurst this weekend.

Colgate: Sam Hunt scored both of Colgate's weekend goals, on the power-play, with Elin Brown assisting on each ... Colgate is currently ranked No. 5 in the nation in power-play as they converted 2-for-7 ... The Raiders will travel to Connecticut and Providence this coming weekend. It will be the first meeting between the Raiders and the Huskies, while the Friars lead Colgate 2-1-1 in the all-time series.

Cornell: Cornell will play its Red and White game this Friday ... Eight freshmen will be welcomed into the newly renovated and expanded Lynah Rink ... The Big Red will play host to Durham Jr. West Lightning this weekend for two exhibition games ... Cornell opens its regular season on Oct. 20 when it plays Niagara at home.

Dartmouth: With two and a half weeks left until the season opener against Mercyhurst, the Big Green hit the ice for their first strategy practice late last week, readying itself for the 2006-07 campaign ... The Dartmouth women's hockey team will host Harvard in its first scrimmage of the year on Oct. 12.

Harvard: Julie Chu and Jennifer Sifers will serve as co-captains this year ... Sixteen letter winners return to the Crimson lineup including Olympians Caitlin Cahow, Sarah Vaillancourt and Chu ... Harvard's first action of the year is an exhibition contest on Oct. 21 vs. McGill.

Princeton: Princeton will see its first competitive action on Saturday afternoon with a scrimmage at Yale. Princeton opens the season the following weekend at Boston College ... Princeton returns two first-team All-ECACHL selections from last season, seniors Laura Watt and Kim Pearce ... Princeton will welcome back junior Liz Keady for the 2006-07 season. Keady took last season off to train with the U.S. National Team and was one of the final cuts for the 2006 Olympic team.

Quinnipiac: It was the 14th meeting between BC and QU on Saturday. The Bobcats have played more games against BC than any other non-league opponent ... After opening the season with three games against nationally ranked opponents, Quinnipiac heads to Boston this weekend to face Northeastern. The teams met last season with the Bobcats taking a 4-3 victory in overtime at the Northford Ice Pavilion. Trudy Reyns' first career goal proved to be the game-winner on a power play in the extra frame.

Rensselaer: The Engineers posted 65 shots on goal in their two-game series at North Dakota ... Rensselaer's defense was led by sophomore goalies Ashley Mayr and Emily Ford, who split time through the series and stopped a combined 31 shots ... Rensselaer will play a two-game set at Boston Univ. this weekend. The Engineers own a 4-0-0 record against the Terriers, including a two-game sweep last season ... Sophomore Melanie Guillemette, leads RPI in scoring with one goal and an assist in three games.

St. Lawrence: St. Lawrence's rookies made an immediate impact in the Wayne State series, with Tara Akstull (3a), Courtney Sawchuk (2a), and Britni Smith (1a) all collecting their first career points against the Warriors. Freshman goalie Maxie Weisz also won her first career start on Saturday, making 13 stops ... With a three-point effort on Friday, junior forward Sabrina Harbec became the fastest player in SLU history to hit the 100 point mark. The St. Hubert, Que. native reached the century mark in her 74th game.

Union: In a 1-0-1 weekend exhibition series against Brock Univ., Union out shot the Badgers, 65-57 ... The Dutchwomen killed 15-of-17 penalties (.882) in the series with Brock, while netting two power play goals of their own ... Union is on the road for the next eight of 10 games, starting with two non-conference games at Robert Morris this weekend. The Dutchwomen lead the series with the Colonials, 1-0-1.

Yale: Sophomore defenseman Helen Resor returns to Yale after spending last season with Team USA ... Ten of Yale's top 11 scorers from last season return, including leading scorer Crysti Howser (12-14-26) ... Yale's freshman class includes Olympian Denise Soesilo. Soesilo, a forward, helped Germany to its best finish ever at the Olympics -- fifth
