Yale Wins Nutmeg Classic

Dartmouth, Princeton and Quinnipiac only others in action

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Just four women's teams in the ECAC Hockey League were in action over the weekend, with Dartmouth, Princeton, Quinnipiac and Yale all back on the ice. The Bobcats and Bulldogs played each other in the Nutmeg Classic and Yale emerged as this year's title holder. The Tigers played two non-league games and split the weekend, while the Big Green won its lone non-conference matchup.

The annual Nutmeg Classic features the three Division I women's teams from the state of Connecticut -- Yale, Quinnipiac and Connecticut. The Bulldogs started off the weekend with a 3-0 blanking of UConn followed by the Bobcats earning a 2-1 victory vs. the Huskies. Yale then capped off the weekend and claimed this year's title with a 7-3 win over the Bobcats.

Quinnipiac's Kallie Flor led the weekend scoring with two goals and two assists in the Classic, scoring once against UConn and once vs. Yale. Crysti Howser and Berit Johnson led the Bulldogs with two goals and an assist each. Yale's Shivon Zilis won all three games between the pipes, stopping 48 shots on the weekend.

The Bobcat's victory over No. 9/No. 8 UConn was the highest nationally ranked opponent any Quinnipiac athletics team has ever beaten in the Division I era which began in 1998-99.

Princeton faced off against Ohio State in two games played at Baker Rink. The visiting Buckeyes took game one 3-2, but the Tigers closed out the weekend with a 2-1 victory. Laura Watt led the way in the victory with two goal, including the game winner at 5:52 in the third. Brittany Parisi won her fourth game of the year after making 25 saves in the game.

Dartmouth was also home, and faced Boston College on Sunday afternoon. All of the scoring came in the first period, with the Big Green scoring two in a row for the 2-1 win. Allie Thunstrom scored the team's firs goal and veteran Gillian Apps netted the winner.

All 12 ECAC Hockey League teams will be back in action this coming week, with Cornell kicking off the action tonight at Providence. League games this weekend have Princeton and Quinnipiac taking on Harvard and Dartmouth, while Brown and Yale travel to Rensselaer and Union.
