Union's Gustafson Holds First Solo Art Exhibition
Schenectady, NY - Senior Kate Gustafson (Kenora, ONT) had a chance to display her talent off the ice with an art exhibit that was shown last week entitled "Taking Off the Layers." The art major had 27 pieces of watercolor and collage on paper displayed in the Union College art department's public atrium along with two pieces of paint on wood.
The artwork was inspired by memories, moments and mistakes of Gustafson's life. It allowed strangers to catch a glimpse of some of the most personal aspects her life, to view the work of her own heart and dreams. The pieces were divided into separate sections, identified by color and each piece placed next to words and quotations with bright color and abstract shapes. The colors included green, purple, blue, red, pink, black and white and each color symbolized and represented a different stage or memory of her life. Some colors were focused on resilience and strength while others were a bit more tragic, dealing with sudden loss.
Gustafson has been recognized for her talent as an artist, receiving the Charles Alexander Richmond Prize for excellence in fine arts at the college. It was her first solo exhibition. Her work will also be displayed in a group show in the Nott Memorial running from May 8-June 11.
