Yale's Soesilo Adds to ECACHL Presence at World Championship

Another ECAC Hockey League athlete has been named to a national team competing in the 2007 IIHF Women's Ice Hockey World Championship. As Yale's Denise Soesilo (Hamburg, Germany) has been named to Team Germany's roster.

Soesilo appeared in 30 games for Yale this past season, finishing with seven goals and six assists. She earned ECAC All-Academic honors and was the ECAC Rookie of the Week Nov. 6, 2006.

Soesilo played for Team Germany in the 2006 Olympics and assisted on the game-winning goal in Germany's 5-2 win over Italy in the classification round. Germany went on to defeat Russia to finish fifth.

Soesilo, who was president of her high school in 10th grade, played violin with the Mendelssohn Youth Symphony Orchestra Hamburg and also plays chamber music. She graduated from Queen Elizabeth High School in Calgary.

In 2003-04 Soesilo decided to do an exchange year in Canada. She eventually wound up playing for the renowned Oval X-Treme in Calgary, a team that included several Canadian Olympians. She won the 2005 WWHL Championship with the X-Treme.

The World Championship runs from Apr. 3 to Apr. 10 in Winnipeg and Selkirk, Man.

In addition to the U.S. and Germany, the field includes reigning Olympic gold medalist Canada, China, Finland, Kazakhstan, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland. The U.S. and Canada have met in all nine previous championship games, with Canada winning eight prior to the U.S. victory in 2005. The World Championship is held in all non-Olympic years.

Germany is in Group B, along with Canada and Switzerland.
