Quinnipiac's Barrett Receives Contract Extension Through 2009-10

Quinnipiac University head women's ice hockey coach Michael Barrett has agreed to a contract extension that will run through the 2009-10 season, as it has been announced by Director of Athletics and Recreation Jack McDonald.

Terms of contract were not disclosed.

"Michael Barrett has done a remarkable job guiding our women's ice hockey team as both a young Division I program and during our inaugural ECAC Hockey League season," McDonald said. "Michael has also become a very important coach and leader in NCAA Division I Women's Ice Hockey, as well as USA Hockey. We are very pleased that Mike and his family will continue to lead our team as we open the TD Banknorth Sports Center."

Barrett is heading into his fifth season as head coach of the Bobcats program in 2006-07 and has taken the program to new heights over the past four years. This past season, Quinnipiac's first in the prestigious ECAC Hockey League, Barrett guided the program to its most successful season with regards to win percentage.

"I'm thrilled and honored to be continuing my coaching career for another four years here at Quinnipiac," Barrett said. "It's my alma mater, and the relationships and friendships that have been built here mean a great deal to my family and I. I look forward to continuing the growth of our program and becoming a force on the national level."

Quinnipiac also won the Nutmeg Classic for the first time in program history in 2005-06. The annual event pits Quinnipiac, Yale and Connecticut against each other in a two-game series. In all, the Bobcats played 10 nationally ranked opponents during the season.

In addition, junior forward Vicky Graham became the school's all-time leading scorer during the year and freshman goalie Connie Craig was named to the ECACHL All-Rookie Team following the season.

Barrett is highly respected in many hockey circles. Earlier this spring, he was appointed as President of the American Women's Ice Hockey Coaches Association. Barrett was elevated to the position after serving a two-year term as Vice-President.

Furthermore, Barrett served as a clinician at the 2004 NCAA YES Clinic that runs in conjunction with the Women's Frozen Four.

The Quinnipiac University women's hockey team opens its 2006-07 season on September 29 for a start of a two-game series at 2006 NCAA champion Wisconsin.
