Women's Preseason ECAC Hockey League Polls Released
ALBANY, N.Y. - According to this year's preseason coaches and media polls, the race for the top spot among the ECAC Hockey League's women will be a tight one, with just a handful of points separating first through third place. Dartmouth tops the coaches list, while Harvard has the media's attention.
Dartmouth captured 117 points and eight first-place votes from the coaches to claim the No. 1 spot, with St. Lawrence just three points behind with four first-place votes. Harvard was the No. 3 pick with 100 points, followed by Princeton (88), Brown and Clarkson with 74 points each, Yale (66), Colgate (53), Cornell (35), Quinnipiac (31), Rensselaer (29) and Union (11).
Harvard earned four first-place votes and 112 points from the media to take the top spot. Dartmouth was second with 110 points and four first-place votes, followed by St. Lawrence with 103 points and two first-place nods. Princeton was third (86), followed by Clarkson (82), Brown and Yale tied for sixth with 67 points each, Colgate (50), Cornell (34), Rensselaer (32), Quinnipiac (26) and Union (11).
Dartmouth and Harvard each have Olympians returning to their squads this season, including the Big Green's Gillian Apps and the Crimson's Julie Chu. Both athletes were also named to the preseason all-league teams. St. Lawrence, a 2006 Frozen Four team, will be led by returning first-team and preseason all-league defenseman Annie Guay.
The women's season opens this Friday when St. Lawrence takes on McGill in an exhibition contest. The first league games of the season take place Saturday, Oct. 21. The Rensselaer women, who are new to the league this season, will play their first-ever ECACHL game on Oct. 28 at Harvard.
