Doug Derraugh '91 Named Cornell Women's Hockey Coach
Alumnus served as interim head coach last season
ITHACA, N.Y. - It has been announced by Andy Noel, the Meakem-Smith Director of Athletics and Physical Education, that Doug Derraugh '91 has been named as the Big Red women's ice hockey coach. After a standout career at Cornell, Derraugh played professional hockey for 13 years. He returned to Cornell last season to lead the women's hockey program on an interim basis.
Derraugh guided the team to a 9-18-1 overall record in his one season as interim head coach. The team's nine wins tripled the win total from the 2004-05 season, as the Big Red showed marked improvement under Derraugh's watch. The squad scored 12 more goals, allowed 18 fewer and recorded 34 more points that the previous season. The 2005-06 season included a thrilling 4-3 upset win over No. 9 Harvard and a 3-1 win over perennial rival Brown.
Derraugh played in all 119 contests for the Big Red in his four seasons, helping lead the Big Red to an NCAA tournament appearance and a second-place finish in the ECAC as a senior co-captain. He led the team in scoring in his final season with 30 goals and 36 assists en route to earning second-team All-Ivy and honorable mention All-ECAC honors. The winner of the team's Nicky Bawlf team MVP and the Ironman Award for determination to overcome injuries, Derraugh's 30 goals is the most ever scored by a senior at Cornell. Overall, he ranks 10th in career scoring for the Big Red with 153 points (66 goals, 87 assists).
After his time at Cornell, Derraugh moved on to the professional ranks, seeing action with nine different teams while playing in some of the top leagues in Norway, Germany, Austria and Finland. He scored more than 100 points in a season twice and posted 30 or more points 10 times. Derraugh ended his career with 257 goals and 347 assists in 637 professional contests.
