Colgate's Tara French Selected to Attend NCAA Leadership Conference
HAMILTON, N.Y. (4/14/06) - Colgate's Tara French (Truro, N.S.) has been selected to attend the 2006 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Leadership Conference.
The NCAA Leadership Conference provides NCAA student-athletes with a forum to openly discuss issues that may affect them on their campuses and in their communities, while also providing them with the opportunity to enhance their leadership, communication, decision-making and problem-solving skills.
The conference, held annually since 1996 in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, is one of the largest non-competitive assemblies of NCAA student-athletes. About 325 student-athletes who compete in fall, winter and spring sports across all three Divisions were selected.
During the five-day leadership conference, student-athletes have the opportunity to discuss a variety of topics, which include the demands and expectations of student-athletes; inclusion education; international student-athlete experiences; recruiting visits; student-athlete responsibility; party behaviors; trust gaps within intercollegiate athletics; and sportsmanship.
To be eligible the student-athletes must be in good academic standing, have athletics eligibility remaining the following year while having the desire to be a leader. All are members of either CHAMPS/Life Skills or Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and were nominated by their institutions.
As a junior French finished fourth in scoring this season with 20 points, including a team-high 18 assists. Her 50 career points have made her Colgate's all-time scoring defenseman. Early in the season, French was a member of the ECACHL All-Star team and a member of the cup-winning Canadian U-22 team. She was named to the all-ECACHL third team and ECACHL academic honor roll at the conclusion of the Raiders' season.
