Colgate Women's Hockey Announces Class of 2010
HAMILTON, N.Y. (5/15/06) - Colgate University women's hockey head coach Scott Wiley has announced the signing of eight players for the Class of 2010.
"I am very excited about the student-athletes that have committed to our program," said Wiley. "They each bring great skills to our program and really want to make an impact at the next level."
Joining the Raiders are three defenders- Jill Cater-Cyker, Ali Edell and Nicole McDonald, four forwards- Marissa Dombovy, Beth Rotenberg, Katie Stewart and Evan Minnick, and one goaltender-Sara Plunkett.
Five players hail from the United States including two from Central New York, and the other three are from Canada.
"I am extremely pleased with this years recruiting class," said Wiley. "This is the deepest class we have ever had and should help our program take another step forward. Both Josh Liegl and Stephanie Jones did a great job this year recruiting quality student-athletes to Colgate."
Jill Cater-Cyker, 5-8, D, Ithaca, N.Y. (Syracuse
Stars)
A 2006 graduate of Ithaca High School, Cater-Cyker has been a
four-year member of the Syracuse Stars. This past year the Stars,
under the tutelage of head coach Bob Hunter finished second in the
New York State Girls Tier I playoffs. Along the way, Cater-Cyker
tallied an estimated 15 goals, 25 assists for 40 points in 60
games. She was selected to the USA Hockey Development Camps in 2003
and 2004 as a forward and was selected to participate again this
summer as a defender.
Marissa Dombovy, 5-8, F, Webster, N.Y. (Syracuse
Stars)
Dombovy will graduate from Webster Thomas H.S. this spring, and
like Cater-Cyker she is also a member of the Syracuse Stars,
playing with them for the past five years. The team finished second
in New York State Girls Tier I playoffs this past year and was
national runner-up in 2005. While playing on the Syracuse U16 team
in 2004, the squad won the national championship. Dombovy also
participated in the Empire State Games where she and her team won
the gold medal. Dombovy also was selected to the USA Hockey Girls
Select 17/18 Festival, where she recorded four assists in five
games.
Ali Edell, D/F, Madison, N.J. (Berkshire
School)
Edell will graduate from the Berkshire School this spring. As a
co-captain, Edell helped to guide the Bears to the New England Prep
School Championship this past season. Edell has participated in the
USA Hockey Select Festivals and also played club hockey with the
Boston Junior Bruins.
Nicole McDonald, 5-7, D, Calgary, Alta. (Bowriver
Bruins)
McDonald has spent the past three seasons with the Bowriver Bruins
of the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League. In 26 games, she
totaled seven goals and seven assists as a defenseman. As an
assistant captain, she helped guide her team to a third-place
finish in the league. She was named the MVP during a game in the
MAC Tournament. McDonald was also a member of the U18 Team Alberta
squad in November 2005.
Evan Minnick, 5-3, F, Highland Ranch, Colo. (Colorado
Select)
Minnick has played seven years for the Colorado Select, most
recently on the U19AAA team. As a captain, she tallied 29 goals and
35 assists for 64 points in 41 games played as a center. The squad
finished second in the Midwest Elite Girls Hockey League this past
season and third in the USA Hockey Nationals. Minnick was named to
the Silver Honor Roll for academics in the league and also received
athletic department honors at Heritage High School. She was an
honorable mention for the league's all-star team and had her jersey
number, #20 retired by the Colorado Select Girls Hockey
Association. She was recently chosen to attend the USA Hockey
Select 17/18 Camp in Lake Placid in July 2006.
Sara Plunkett, 5-3, G, Barrington, R.I. (St. George's
School)
Plunkett has been a goaltender for St. George's School for the past
three years. She was an assistant captain for the Dragons who
finished third in the Independent School League, one of the top
prep school leagues in New England, in 2006. She was in net for 20
games this season and recorded a 2.30 goals against average.
Plunkett was named the team's Most Valuable Player and earned
all-ISL and all-state honors. She previously played for Barrington
High School.
Beth Rotenberg, 5-8, F, Toronto, Ont. (Toronto Jr.
Aeros)
Rotenberg comes from the Toronto Jr. Aeros that won the Provincial
Women's Hockey League (PWHL) this past year. The Aeros was the same
team that Colgate played in an exhibition game last October at
Starr Rink. With the Aeros, Rotenberg recorded 13 goals and six
assists for 19 points in 26 games. She was a member of the U18 Team
Ontario Red that was national champions of the National Women's
Under-18 Championship in November of 2005. Rotenberg was also a
member of the U18 Team Ontario Blue in January of 2005 where was a
two-time game MVP. Prior to playing for the Aeros, she was a member
of the Mississauga Jr. Chiefs. Rotenberg will graduate in 2006 from
Humberside Collegiate Institute.
Katie Stewart, 5-8, F, Hensall, Ont. (Bluewater Jr.
Hawks)
Stewart plays for the Bluewater Jr. Hawks of the PWHL that finished
second in the league this past season. In her three-year career
with the Hawks, she scored 49 goals and 52 assists for 101 points
in 68 games. This past season she finished second on the team and
fourth in the PWHL in scoring with 46 points in 30 games. Stewart
has acted as assistant captain of the Hawks for the past two years.
Like her new teammate Rotenberg, Stewart was also a member of the
U18 Team Ontario Red that won the National Women's Under-18
Championship last November. She will graduate from South Huron in
the spring.
