Weekly ECAC Hockey League Women's Honorees Announced
ALBANY, N.Y. - Four athletes have been honored by the ECAC Hockey League. It was announced yesterday (Jan. 8) that Dartmouth College's Gillian Apps (Unionville, Ont.), Yale University's Shivon Zilis and Harvard University's Julie Chu (Fairfield, Conn.) and Christina Kessler (Oakville, Ont.) have been tabbed with the league's weekly awards.
Apps and Chu were named Co-Players of the Week, while Zilis is the Goaltender of the Week and Kessler is the Rookie of the Week.
Apps and Chu led their teams to weekend sweeps of Quinnipiac and Princeton. Apps had three goals and an assist on the weekend, while Chu had two goals (including a power-play marker) and an assist.
With her team-high 19th goal of the season, Apps extended her point streak to 10 games. In those 10 games, she has recorded 17 points. Apps' points have played a key role in the team's 10-game unbeaten streak, which is the longest unbeaten streak in the nation. Apps spent two years playing for the Beatrice Aeros before competing in the IIHF World Championships with the Canadian National team in 2003 and 2004. She continues to compete for the National Team.
Chu extended her streak of consecutive games with at least one point to 20 (dating to the 2004-05 season) and remained atop the national leader board in points per game (2.33) and assists per game (1.67). Chu has been a member of the U.S. National Team since 2000 and played hockey at Choate Rosemary Hall prior to attending Harvard.
Zilis extended her scoreless streak in net to 160:24 after posting back-to-back shutouts over the weekend. She made 34 stops in the two wins, as her team swept Union and Rensselaer. The junior has allowed only three goals (two of which came on power plays) in her last 249:10 in net (0.72 GAA) and has shutouts in three of her last four games. Zilis played hockey for the Aurora Panthers prior to enrolling at Yale.
Kessler who has earned league honors already this season, made 30 saves en route to blanking Princeton. She made 17 of those saves in the third period, picking up her third shutout in six career starts for the Crimson. The win lowered her goals against average to 1.32 (good for fifth in Division I) and bettered her save percentage to a nation's-best .951. Kessler played hockey for the Toronto Jr. Aeros of the PWHL last year before enrolling at Harvard.
Eleven other student-athletes were named to the league's weekly honor roll: Brown -- Rylee Olewinski (Jr. F, Burr Ridge, Ill.); Clarkson -- Lindsay Williams (Sr., C, Mississauga, Ont.); Colgate -- Beth Rotenberg (Fr., F, Toronto, Ont.); Cornell -- Halina Kristalyn (Sr., F, Bloomfield, Ont.); Dartmouth -- Sarah Parsons (Fr., F, Dover, Mass.); Harvard -- Brittany Martin (So., G, Torrance, Calif.); Quinnipiac -- Janelle Wolitski (Sr., G, Unity, Sask.); Rensselaer -- Brooke Thompson (Jr., F, Rochester, N.Y.); St. Lawrence -- Marianna Locke (So., F, Brasher Falls, N.Y.); Union -- Amanda Hanson (Sr., G, Brainerd, Minn.); Yale -- Kelsey Johnson (Sr., F, Wayzata, Minn.).
