Weekly ECAC Hockey League Women's Honorees Announced
ALBANY, N.Y. - Three athletes have been honored by the ECAC Hockey League. It was announced yesterday (Dec. 4) that Clarkson University's Genevieve Lavoie (St. Laurent, Que.), Colgate University's Brook Wheeler (Brussels, Ont.) and Harvard University's Christina Kessler (Oakville, Ont.) have been tabbed with the league's weekly awards.
Lavoie is both the Player and Rookie of the Week, while Wheeler and Kessler share the Goaltender of the Week honors.
Lavoie led the league in scoring this past weekend with eight points on six goals and two assists. She had a pair of hat tricks in leading the Golden Knights to a sweep of Yale and Brown. The freshman left wing figured in on all of Clarkson's scoring in Friday's 4-2 win over the Bulldogs with three goals, including the game winner and a power-play tally, along with one assist. She earned her third hat trick of the season with two power-play tallies and the game winner in Saturday's 4-1 win over the Bears.
The daughter of Jean-luc Lavoie, Genevieve has scored 13 goals and two assists over the past seven games. For the season, she leads the Knights with 21 points on 14 goals and seven assists. Lavoie played hockey for her St. Laurent College team before enrolling at Clarkson.
Wheeler backstopped Colgate to a series sweep with shutouts over Union and Rensselaer. She made 25 saves in Colgate's 8-0 shutout on Friday against the Dutchwomen, and stopped 14 shots in a 1-0 shutout of the Engineers on Saturday. It was the first time the Raiders' have swept on the road since Feb. 2005, and the first time they've recorded two shutouts in a weekend since Jan. 2002 when they defeated Division III Utica 11-0 and 7-0.
The wins were Colgate's first blankings of the season, and gave the junior netminder her seventh and eighth career shutouts. She sports a perfect 5-0 record in conference play with a .918 save percentage and a 2.56 goals against average versus league opponents. The daughter of Gerry and Brenda Wheeler, Brooke played hockey for her Culver Academy squad prior to enrolling at Colgate.
Kessler posted a shutout against nationally ranked Minnesota Duluth over the weekend. On Saturday, she posted her second career shutout by stopping all 20 shots she faced. It was her second shutout in three career starts. Kessler's performance against Minnesota-Duluth allowed the Crimson to take a 4-0 win and complete a sweep of its two-game series against the Bulldogs. The win was Harvard's eight straight victory, marking the longest active winning streak in Division I.
Kessler has a 3-0-0 record this season with a .986 save percentage and a 0.33 goals-against average. She played hockey for the Toronto Jr. Aeros of the PWHL last year before enrolling at Harvard
