Two Teams Sweep League Foes Over Weekend
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Harvard and Colgate got their 2005-06 ECAC Hockey League seasons off to a good start, as the two teams earned four points this past weekend with sweeps of league foes. Yale, Princeton, Brown and Dartmouth also earned conference points with one win each, while Union, St. Lawrence and Clarkson took two games each vs. non-ECACHL teams.
Colgate played host to Brown and Yale over the weekend and had several standout performances in earning the sweep. Two players in particular, Cassie Reid and Brook Wheeler, were good enough to earn the league's weekly honors as well. Reid picked up five points vs. the Bears and Bulldogs with two goals and three assists. Both of her goals were game winners. Wheeler stopped a total of 43 shots in the two games, including 23 vs. Brown to earn her first shutout of the season. The two victories also marked the first time in Wheeler's career that she posted a weekend sweep of two separate league opponents.
Harvard earned its weekend Ws over Quinnipiac and Princeton, and in doing so, moved up a couple of notches in the national polls. Senior goaltender Ali Boe earned her 50th career victory with the win vs. the Bobcats and made a total of 62 saves over the weekend.
Yale and Brown each earned their single wins over Cornell, while Princeton downed Dartmouth and the Big Green defeated Quinnipiac. Sheila Zingler scored an unassisted goal for the Bulldogs to win their game on Friday, while Frances Male tallied for the Bears mid-way through the third for their win. The Tigers, which are now ranked ninth nationally, used special teams play to down the Big Green, scoring power-play ad short-handed goals. The shorty by Tarah Clark less than a minute into the third proved to be the winner. Dartmouth rebounded on Saturday afternoon, with Tiffany Hagge leading the way on two goals, including the winning tally.
In non-league games, Union took two from Sacred Heart, outscoring the Pioneers 13-5. Freshman forward Suzy Pocock earned Rookie of the Week honors after picking up a goal in each game along with two assists on Saturday. Her first collegiate goal came at 3:48 in the third period on Friday.
St. Lawrence had outstanding play from Emilie Berlinguette and Lisa Batchelor who accounted for four points each in the wins over Northeastern and Providence. Clarkson also downed the Huskies and Friars. Micheleen Devine had a goal in each game, while Ashley Shaidle and Katie Morrison had five (1-4) and four (1-3) points, respectively, over the two games.
This coming weekend's league games have Clarkson and St. Lawrence traveling to Harvard and Dartmouth and Union at Quinnipiac for two. In non-league play, Cornell will visit Niagara for two; Princeton is at Ohio State on Friday and Saturday; Brown travels to Minnesota for two; Yale is home vs. Boston College and New Hampshire; and Colgate plays Robert Morris at home before a Sunday exhibition vs. Brock. Dartmouth will kick off this week's competition with a 7 p.m. contest tonight (Nov. 8) at Boston College.
