Brown Vaults to Top of League; Dartmouth Wins Three
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Heading into this past week's games, Brown sat in fifth place in the ECAC Hockey League standings. After sweeping two games at home, the Bears now find themselves in first place with 19 points. Dartmouth is also looking to make a move, as the Big Green has won its last three games, including a 3-1 victory over Harvard on Monday night.
Following Brown and Dartmouth over the weekend was Yale, which earned three points with a win and a tie. Cornell also picked up a league win over the weekend, and in doing so, keeps is hopes of a playoff bid alive. St. Lawrence saw non-league action over the weekend and earned two wins.
The Bears started off its week with a 3-1 win over Yale and ended it with a 3-0 blanking of Colgate. It's only downer of the week was a loss to Cornell. Sophomore Hayley Moore had a point in each of the Bear's games last week, including the game winner vs. Colgate, and was named the league's Player of the Week. Keaton Zucker also had a goal vs. the Raiders and assisted on Moore's tally and Nicole Stock earned the shutout after making 15 stops. Margaret Ramsay had the winning goal vs. the Bulldogs.
Cornell earned its second league victory of the season against when it stumped the Bears 3-1 on Friday. Power-play goals by Brianne Schmidt and Brittany Forgues (game winner) led the way, and Halina Kristalyn added an unassisted insurance marker mid-way through the third to help earn the win. Junior netminder Beth Baronick earned the win with 26 saves. She followed that up with 26 more in a tight 1-goal loss to Yale and was named the Goaltender of the Week for her 51 save, winning weekend.
Dartmouth posted two shutouts last weekend over Union, with Kate Lane and Carli Clemis each earning one between the pipes. Clemis then went on to stop 22 shots last night (Jan. 30) to earn the team's third win in four days, a 3-1 victory over Harvard. Freshman Maggie Kennedy had both game winners vs. the Dutchwomen and also had three assists for a five-point weekend. Her league-leading performance earned her Rookie of the Week honors. She was also one of three freshmen to score against the Crimson, with her game winner coming at 2:52 in the second.
Yale's lone weekend win came against Cornell with Deena Caplette scoring the winner with a power-play marker in the third period. The Bulldogs had tied Colgate the night before with Kelsey Johnson scoring the matching goal at 15:21 in the third..
St. Lawrence earned its two non-league wins behind the multi-goal efforts of Sabrina Harbec and Crystal Connors. Harbec had two in the 3-0 win and Connors posted two goals and an assist in the 6-3 win. Colgate's Tara French became Colgate's all-time scoring defenseman on in the tie when she assisted on the Raiders' third goal of the game. She now has 46 career points.
This week's action starts tonight (Jan. 31) with Princeton back in action at Quinnipiac. The weekend's league games have Brown and Yale at Harvard and Dartmouth, while St. Lawrence and Clarkson play host to the Bobcats and Tigers. Cornell will also play two at Union. In non-league play, Colgate travels to Pennsylvania for two games at Mercyhurst.
