Colgate Earns Shutout, Brown and Clarkson Sweep in ECACHL Women's Action
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Colgate pulled off the upset in the ECAC Hockey League over the weekend when it shut out St. Lawrence on Saturday, while Clarkson moved into a tie for first place after sweeping its games. Brown also earned a sweep in league play, and Quinnipiac took two non-conference contests.
Colgate's Brook Wheeler stood tough in goal in earning the shutout over the then No. 3 ranked Saints. The junior netminder posted a career-high 51 saves to earn the win, becoming just the third Raider goaltender to ever stop 50 or more shots in a game. Special teams also played a key role in the victory, as all three Colgate goals were short-handed markers. Sam Hunt scored the first one, which proved to be the game winner, and was followed by Becky Irvine and Elin Brown with shorties of their own.
The Saints had started off the weekend on a positive note, earning a 5-1 win over Cornell. Sabrina Harbec led the way in the win with two goals and an assist.
Keaton Zucker paced Brown to its weekend sweep, racking up six points in those games after getting an assist and a game-tying goal vs. Boston University earlier in the week. Her eight-point output led the league and earned her Player of the Week honors. She had four assists in game one vs. Union and followed that up with two goals in game two. Hayley Moore also had solid numbers vs. the Dutchmen, with three goals and three assists over the two games. The Defense was also on top of things, allowing just 27 shots on the weekend, with O'Hara Shipe earning Friday's shutout.
Clarkson picked up its four points with a 3-1 win over the Raiders and a 3-0 shutout vs. Cornell. Junior Ashley Shaidle had the winning goals in both games for the Golden Knights, inicluding a power-play marker vs. Colgate. The two wins also gave head coach Rick Seeley his 100th victory, and he now has a 100-52-14 career record, including a 46-36-10 mark in his third year at Clarkson. The Golden Knights four-point weekend moved the team from fourth in the standings up to a tie for first with 18 points after 12 games.
In non-league play, Quinnipiac earned 4-3 and 4-2 victories over visiting Robert Morris. Freshman blue liner Nicolette Leone earned Rookie of the Week honors after assisting on half the Bobcats' goals. Classmates Kristin Emerick and Hayley McMeekin followed her in scoring with three points each - both had a goal and two assists on the weekend.
Dartmouth also had a non-league game, facing New Hampshire last Friday. Alex Zagaria scored the Big Green's lone goal in the 3-1 loss.
This week's action starts tonight (Jan. 24) with Brown playing at Yale. The weekend's league games have Cornell and Colgate visiting the Bears and Bulldogs and Dartmouth at Union. Next Monday has Harvard at Dartmouth for an 8 p.m. CSTV contest. In non-league play, St. Lawrence will travel to Niagara for two while Clarkson faces Rensselaer for one game on Saturday.
