St. Lawrence Sweeps Again

Princeton Beats/Ties Nationally Ranked Opponent

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The ECAC Hockey League earned nine non-conference victories last weekend as the 11 teams gear up for conference play this coming week. St. Lawrence continued its winning ways with two wins and remains unbeaten through six games (5-0-1). Princeton had a good weekend as well, as the Tigers opened their season with a win and a tie over a nationally ranked opponent. Preseason league-favorite Dartmouth also opened with a victory, as did five other conference teams.

First, the Saints swept Niagara by 2-0 and 4-3 scores at Appleton Arena behind the strong play of freshman Meaghan Guckian the ECACHL Rookie of the Week. The goalie made 24 stops for her first career shutout and then made 29 the next day. Teammate Chelsea Grills also played a big role in the sweep, as the sophomore netted her first career hat trick in the 4-3 victory and also assisted on Saturday's game winner.

Princeton's goaltender Roxanne Gaudiel played a key role in her team's success, as the Tigers earned a 4-4 tie and 4-1 win over then-No. 10 Providence. The junior stopped 39 shots over the weekend, including 22 in the win. In the tie, it was all Kim Pearce, as the sophomore got the season rolling by scoring all four Princeton goals.

Dartmouth played just one game in its opening weekend and earned an easy 7-1 victory over visiting Boston College. The Big Green, ranked second in the country so far in the national polls, was boosted by junior forward Katie Weatherson who had three goals and two assists in the game for a career-high five points. This week's Player of the Week, she now has 100 career points, making her the 23rd Big Green player to reach that milestone.

Other victories for the league came from Brown, Colgate, Vermont, Union and Yale. The Bears and Catamounts each earned shutouts last Friday, with 2-0 and 8-0 victories.

Stacy Silverman made her first collegiate start made 26 saves for Brown, while juniors Hilary Johnson and Abbey Kaknes each tallied a pair of goals for UVM.

This coming weekend features eight league contests, with Brown, Harvard, Yale and Princeton each playing host.
