ECAC Women's Hockey League Well Represented at USA Festival
ALBANY, N.Y. - Players from the ECAC Women's Hockey League dominate the rosters for the upcoming USA Hockey Festival to be held in Lake Placid, August 15-22. A total of 24 current student-athletes and recent alumni are listed on the rosters for the event, with coaches Digit Murphy (Brown) and Jeff Kampersal (Princeton) serving as head coaches for two of the three teams. Overall, 63 athletes were named to the Festival rosters, which include athletes from eight ECAC Hockey League teams.
The announcement was made by USA Hockey Executive Director Doug, USA Hockey Vice President and International Chairperson Tony Rossi and U.S. Women's National Team Head Coach Ben Smith.
Participants in the Festival are divided into three teams (Red, White, Under-22) which will participate in daily practices and compete in a round-robin tournament at the Olympic Center.
Following the seven-day event, the U.S. Under-22 Team will host the Canadian Under-22 Team in a three-game series, Aug. 25-28, in Lake Placid and Burlington, Vt. The 2004 series marks the fifth-ever three-game series, which alternates the host site each year. The first two games will be held at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, Aug. 25-26, and the final game will be held on Aug. 28 at University of Vermont's Gutterson Fieldhouse.
The list includes five ECAC Hockey League athletes - Katie King, Tara Mounsey, Julie Chu, Angela Ruggiero and Andrea Kilbourne - that have a total of eight Olympic appearances, three gold medals and five silver medals between them. It also includes a Patty Kazmaier Award winner (Ruggiero-2004) and ECAC Hockey League Players of the Year (Ruggiero-2004; King-1997).
Brown University led this year's selections with eight athletes gracing the roster, including 2004 National Team members Pam Dreyer '03 (G) and King '97 (F) on the White Team. Also skating for the White squad, coached by Kampersal, are Kim Insalaco '03, 2002 National Team member Mounsey '01 and Kathleen Kauth '01. Rising seniors Amy McLaughlin, Jessica Link and Keaton Zucker will suit up for the Under-22 team.
Princeton followed with five selections, while Harvard had four. Cornell and Dartmouth also had multiple picks with two each, while Clarkson, St. Lawrence and Yale were all represented with individual selections.
