Mason Sets Strong Example
NEW HAVEN — If Brendan Mason
isn’t playing hockey or hitting the books, it’s a safe
bet he’s out training for something. Anything.
“I’m kind of obsessed with it,” says Mason, a
senior forward for the Yale men’s hockey team. “I do a
lot of off-ice training, and not just for hockey. Rock climbing,
swimming. I was doing jiu-jitsu for a while. I’m an active
guy, it’s just a part of me, I guess.”
The lifestyle is a byproduct of his hometown. Nainamo, British
Columbia, a picturesque city on the Vancouver Island waterfront, is
a fitness enthusiast’s dream. Television never appealed to
Mason — it wasn’t even allowed in his parents’
home. Instead, he stayed busy with team sports and just about every
other outdoor activity under the sun. When he wasn’t playing,
he was training to make himself better.
