Allain's Gamble in Goal Pays Off Big for Bulldogs
WORCESTER, Mass. — The move was implausible by any measure
of unpredictably that Keith Allain has shown in his four seasons at
the helm of the Yale program. Even for Allain, who can Riverboat
gamble with any hockey coach in America, this one had capital
‘HUH?’ written all over it, under it, and right through
the heart of it.
Allain stretched beyond unconventional Saturday into the realm of
the absurd by electing to start senior Ryan Rondeau in goal against
heavily favored North Dakota in the opening round of the NCAA
tournament — after nearly four months of game inactivity by
Rondeau.
Yet Yale will face Boston College at 5:30 p.m. at the DCU Center
largely because Allain’s instincts, practiced eye, and a very
short conversation with Rondeau told him that the young man from
Carvel, Alberta, was the right man to face the Fighting Sioux.
