HAMDEN — For a period and change, there was a touch of magic
in the air for the Yale hockey team, even in the midst of
Quinnipiac University’s hostile home turf.
Yale junior Dennis Kearney opened the scoring from point-blank
range at 10 minutes, 12 seconds of a first period that ended in a
tie at 1. Then, at 1:29 of the second, Kearney struck again from
the bottom of the left circle to push Yale into the lead again
— while gold medal-winning sister Hannah Kearney sat in the
suites above, rooting passionately for Yale, as she always
does.
“That was kind of neat,” Yale coach Keith Allain said
following Quinnipiac’s 4-3 victory — one night after
Yale clinched the ECAC Hockey top seed for the second straight
year. “Too bad it didn’t have a gold medal ending like
she did. But it was a nice story.”
