WORCESTER — When the Yale men’s hockey team floated into the NCAA Tournament in record-breaking fashion last season, defenseman Tom Dignard couldn’t do much more than watch.

Dignard, a Reading native, couldn’t participate in the postseason as he continued to heal from a lacerated spleen, suffered against Quinnipiac nearly two months earlier. The injury left him cooped up in a hospital for a week and forced Dignard to become a spectator in the midst of Yale’s most successful season to date.

While the Bulldogs fought to survive the NCAA East Regional against Vermont, Dignard watched squandered opportunities doom his teammates. The favored Bulldogs lost, 4-1, their season cemented at 24-8-2.
